I have not listened to any home stereo speakers with horns
in years. I went to a local shop that carries Klipsch and
listened to the KLF 30. All they carry is home theater
equipment, it was driven by a Yamaha receiver and they
were using a dvd changer to play cds. I took some Stevie
Ray Vaughan, Steely Dan, Lou Ann Barton, Brian Setzer
Orchestra, Dwight Yoakam & Derailers cds. Listened to
several tracks off of each cd. The sound was crisp and
clean with good bass but vocals sounded shouty. I was
constantly aware I was listening to horns. Was it the
electronics they were using or do the KLF 30's sound like
this? Or does it take some time to get used to the sound
of horn speakers having used direct radiators for 22
years. I like classic Klipsch speakers from the 70's and
don't remember the Cornwalls sounding like this but it was
many years ago. I am driving to Houston Friday to check
out some Cornwall 1's. Can anyone tell me the why the KLF
30's sound was shouty & if the Cornwalls will have similar
sound? I will be using a Mcintosh solid state amp &
preamp.

Lonestar Blues,

I generally agree with Les. I first hooked my KLF 20s up to an old Kenwood receiver, and they sounded a bit edgy. Since then I've replaced the Kenwood with a nice preamp/processor from Sherwood Newcastle and a nice five channel amplifier from Rotel (hardly super high-end). The difference is very noticeable. I really am in love with the sound of these speakers. Crisp, clear and fast, but also rich and smooth. The KLF 30s should certainly not sound any more sbouty than the KLF 20s.

On the other hand, I will allow that there is a distinct sound that horn driven speakers have. That took no getting used to for me, because I liked the sound right away (I am actually now thinking of getting Heresys for a bedroom set-up). It could be, however, that 22 years of direct radiating speakers has influenced your expectation of how recorded music should sound.

In any event, though I have not heard Cornwalls (only Heresys, La Scalas and Klipschorns), I have heard that they are truly one of the nicest speakers ever made. Let us know your reaction when you get back from Houston!

Regards,

Josh

I auditioned the KLF30's a couple of weeks ago. Same deal - yamaha amp with a CD changer. I heard the same things you did. Except I thought the lows were looser than they could be - if the box was better braced. Sides moved too much for me.

Do a search on the Bottlehead forum - IIRC Doc B. mentioned that the KLF20's could be pretty good if you ripped out the cheesey crossover, added some structural bracing, and tamed the horns.
