high efficiency (91 up) speaker (stands ok) that is in the $2500.00 range.

I may consider a floor standing 3 way if it has a room footprint of not larger than lets say 12 x 12 x 40. ($4000)

Please send me a link/dealer info if you have it. I am in the ATlanta, GA area.

Jonathon--When it comes to turnkey systems with moderately high efficiency it's pretty hard to beat the old Klipsch Heresey. Don't worry about the money (they're less than you're willing to spend), IMO the Heresey sounds better than ANY direct-radiator, cone-dome thingy at any price. Efficiency is 96db, not bad, the compromise for such efficiency in a small box is lack of deep bass. Klipsch also has a new line of stand mounted and slender tower speakers, called RFs I think. These sound pretty good too and seem to be well received by conventional audiophiles (I'm not sure that's a good thing :-). I don't know the efficiency on them but I'm guessing mid 90s.

What are the dimensions of the Klipsch Heresey? I am SEVERELY space constrained. The issue of poor bass I already have the solution to. The solution is an electronic crossover, multi-amping, and a subwoofer. Those items have been a part of my rig for many years.

Before I started messing around with "flea power" SE tube amps, the speakers I swore by, and still do to an extent, are an old 1st generation pair of ProAc Tablettes. The Tablettes sound great but are definitely unfriendly to "flea power" SE tube amps.

Eli---Well just let me look here in my big ring-binder full of spec sheets. Here we go, Klipsch Heresey II: 21.75" high, 15.5" wide, 13.25" deep, weight 37 lbs., ehmm, sturdy little bugger.

Thanks..now I have to find someplace to audition them[nf], posted on April 14, 2000 at 17:33:35

Here's the efficiency ratings of a few of the newer Klipsch speakers:

Klipsch Legend KLF 30 = 102 dB Tower
Klipsch Legend KLF 20 = 100 dB Tower
Klipsch Legend KLF 10 = 98 dB med = 39"High/12"Wide/17"Deep/66lbs
Klipsch Reference RF-3 = 98 dB med = 38.5"High/9"Wide/16.2"Deep/56lbs
Klipsch Reference RB-5 = 96 dB small = 17"High/9"Wide/12.6"Deep/23lbs

The first two are heavy tower-speakers, mentioned here just for comparison. The bookshelf-type speakers are the last 3. Obviously, the RB-5, being so light, small and efficient, is the true bookshelf speaker! And it is most likely what Jonathon is looking for. Anyway, I hope this helps! If you need more info, check the Klipsh link below. Good luck!

Hi

I bought a tube amp from Frank at FSAUDIOWEB.com.
He has some inexpensive SET speakers.
Last week when I spoke to him he was checking out a new manufacturer who has a killer SET friendly monitor..94 dB ???

Check him out....

Hope this helps

Eli,

You can change the woofer to a Heresy II and the bass really improves.

www.klipsch.com check out the BB.

Actually, the KLF 10s and RF3s are floor standers too ("F" stands for floor and "B" stands for bookshelf and "P" stands for powered, in the new Klipsch designations).

The KLF 20s are 12" by 18" by 42", so they're not too far out of your size range, and at $1,500 retail they are well within your price range. They are very nice. The RB5s are very nice too -- small, real wood veneer, horn driven.

Thanks Tom.

As I feared, the "Heresy" is way too big for my limited space. Even if turned on its side (something I dislike anyway), at 15.5" it will not fit (PHOOEY).

How good are Heresey's?, or is it Hershel's? I have immediate access to a used pair.

Very good mid and top somewhat limited bass. Ok stage width and depth. All adds up to a particularly fine speaker one of only a few that I can live with.

Have you tried Audio Atlanta, located on the square in Marietta ?

They are the most tube friendly place in the city. There is also a used equipment dealer on Beaver Ruin Rd in Lilburn. He may be able to get you a pair of older JBL (like L-112). Email me direct and I can refer you to a diy tube lover in Chamblee; loves horns as his shop system is a pair of Altec VOT and he has made more than a few SE-300b amps.

Best,

Ross
