The picture shows a JBL 2446. It shows where one attaches a horn. The exit hole in the center of the driver is about 2 inches deep and 2 inches in diameter. Is that hole part of the throat chamber or does it count towards the first 2 inches of whatever horn you attach it to?

It depends on the horn used with it. If the horn throat constricts that opening it's a front chamber, if not it's part of the throat.

Hi, ACMINC

I looked at the spec sheet for the this driver but cannot tell if the throat / chamber has a taper from the back (smaller)to the front, most JBL drivers I have and seen do taper. Ideally, you would want the rear of your horn match the degree taper (of the driver) for the first few inches. I just assume JBL engineered the drivers to use with their horns and have taken that into consideration. I don't know the answer to your question but where your horn meets the driver MUST be near perfect and smooth. Any errors, irregularities at this point will cause distortion and is not correctable even with DSP. The JBL spec sheet recommends a pure exponential curve horn to get the most high frequencies. All depends on the frequency range you wish to cover.

Good luck,
Joe

I have had several pairs of those drivers with various horns. I'm pretty sure their design was paired with the 2360A horns (elephant butt cheek horns), for which, Don Keele and other JBL Engineers received an Academy Award 19 years ago presented by a 27 year old Charlize Theron!

i would say based on just common sense..it is part of the horn. and the 2" distance shoudl be added to horn length if you are designing a horn for it.
if you are using an existing horn, because of the stub, you would be limited to horn choices that match this flare rate. as others have said, jbl horns of that era would be the logical starting point. i think tad horns would work well too. 2445 is a really good driver and under-valued. in my house 2440 was a little bit better sound wise but 2445 might be the better driver to build a full system around (in my experiene, the better the compression driver the harder it is to blend in with woofer).

YES common sense says that the 2 inches count towards the axially length of the horn. I looked at the JBL 2382A horn. Its axially length is 9.3 inches. Its also an exponential horn. Hornresp calculates an exponential 350Hz horns axially length as 11.22 inches. So 9.3 inches plus those 2 inches yields 11.22 inches. Therefore IMHO that 2 inches counts towards the total horns axially length.

That's only true when trying to blend with a Direct Radiator rather than a bass HORN.

that has not been my past experience with tad drivers on a5 type mid bass horn. but my test bed has now improved.. so i will have more options to experiment. if you are right, my work will be reduced.

If you do use Bass Reflex with the 2446, you will have better luck with Twin 12" drivers, like the Eminence Delta Pro 12A or the Kappa 12A's in Parallel and with a D'Appolito configuration. Just sayin'

I really like my Modified Edgar Titan II's with Seismic. EXTREMELY revealing of any recordings from crap to best.

I added Ciare Bullet tweeters, which are 4 db more sensitive than the B&C DE-120 drivers (110 vs 106) and have a narrower dispersion, eliminating the wall bounce effect from forced corner placement in concrete basement.

After seeing JBL 4550's, I can see why you pooh pooh BR, rightfully so!

Rock on! or "Jazz on" in my case!

i am ok with sealed boxes.. duntech, dunlavy, celestion3. to my ears, BR muddies the bass. i prefer "less" bass to muddy bass.

Maybe so, but that JBL horn/reflex box you have is still bass reflex below the horn cutoff, so you are not a purist after all. Are you?
