Looking for opinions
big 1980s studio monitors
SGM1000

locally for sale, first owner.

Trying to motivate a friend to go and listen to them - because I think (if they are like most 15" DC Tannoys I've heard) they would be perfect for his taste!

I've owned (and still own) many Tannoy Dual Concentrics and SuperDuals.

Closest I've owned to the SGM1000 is the SGM-15B, which uses the 3839 driver in a smaller (122 litre) cabinet. That may, or may not, be the same 15" DC used in the SGM1000.

Lovely speakers! Even better when I invested in the "hard-edge" recone kit—but that's another story.

I'd say that anyone considering investing up to $10K in a pair of speakers who has the opportunity to audition the SMG1000 (or the SGM-15B) should indeed do so before committing funds elsewhere.

(The attached photo is not of the SGM1000 or the SMG-15B; it's one of my large Tannoy systems: the VS218-DR subwoofers and the V15 DC driver (with custom cabinet and passive crossovers).

I just saw your answer as I've been unable to connect to the asylum during the European confinement...
we went to have a listen to the SGM1000.
Unfortunately, the seller has them connected to a 2000W class D Crown amplifier, with a lot of digital ancillary equipment, and made us listen to a low quality mp3 playlist.
The sound was the worse I've heard in a long long time, and of course, failed to impress my friend. Pity. The seller was apparently certain he had the best sound around... I don't get it. No bass, shrill highs, hashy background... terrible.
