Does anyone know whether Ponoplayer uses the voltage or current output of the ES9018 DAC chip?

I am also surprised that Gryphon seems to be implying that the voltage output is superior to the current output (in the Stereophile review of the $39,000 Ethos cd player).

Probably should try emailing or calling Ayre directly. I'd be interested in the response.

I'm not quite sure that this answers your question, but I found the following on the web.

"The DAC chip's output comes in the form of current, so Ayre designed a proprietary, fully discrete, fully- balanced, zero-feedback current-to-voltage stage. This then goes to a fully discrete, zero-feedback buffer stage to drive both the headphone output and the line stage output." (Link below)
