Do you have a DAC that displays incoming bit depth as well as frequency? The latter is common but not all DACS provide the former.

I am getting a strange format with what the Qobuz desktop app indicates are 16/44.1 streams. My DAC identifies them as incoming 17/44.1 ! Yes I have been through all of the usual checks e.g.cables, rebooting the DAC, Qobuz app etc.

I have checked incoming 16/44.1 streams from other sources and they are all displayed as 16/44.1. It is only Qobuz.

Are you seeing anything similar?

lists sampling rate and not bit depth. :-(

works correctly all the time.

yes, actually my DAC is silent on bit depth too, posted on June 9, 2017 at 13:23:13

but why should I bother if it sounds good?

" but why should I bother if it sounds good?"

No reason at all unless you are worried that it isn't working correctly or just have an enquiring mind.

Taking the latter as my starting point I have now tried a completely different computer source running another copy of the Qobuz desktop app with a different version of Windows 10. I still get 17 not 16 bits.

So I am wondering if this is a side effect of ABS (adaptive bit streaming) when accessing bit rates lower than the maximum given that there is probably a common output format for all streams, rather like UHF B&W and colour TV once had (i.e. the difference was made at the receiver not transmission end). Could this apparently non-standard format be the result? NB: the 17 bit word length only occured after a recent upgrade to the app promulgated by Qobuz.

Any experts on ABS out there?
