Warranty Question

Hello Folks I'm new around here. I read on this Sony site that the ES range of components get a 5 year parts/labour warranty, but when my 777 arrived in the UK it only offered 12 months. Sony UK tell me this is related to "marketing by country", explaining that Germany might get 6 months warranty on the same product that goes to USA with 5 years cover! How can this be? Who on earth would buy the extra cover that is offered at point of sale to extend to 3 or 5 years when you know that such cover would be part of the original selling price in a different country? And also could I claim against the manufacturer if my unit failed within its (global) warranty time even though my own nations warranty time had expired? The real boner is that warranty cover must surely be linked to life expectancy of the product....regardless of location.
