Hello,

I have a Bryston 9BST amp and am tempted to try the Custom mode on my SCD-777ES. I was just wondering if the amp could take it? Also, is it just the amp or more likely the speakers that could be damaged? I have Monitor Audio Silver 5i's (will be upgrading next year sometime after I pay off all my recent expenses..:)

FYI..have about 90 hours (SACD side) on my SCD-777ES..have heard some improvement...although it seems to be lacking openess and air...hope to hear that after 200 hours?

Since the introduction of SACD this issue has been discussed. To my knowledge there has never been a posting where the contributor either experienced or was made aware of damage done by running the machines in custom mode. Help me out here guys . . . ever heard ANYthing about damage?

At ninety hours, you are just poised to enter the corridor of hell. Things will get worse before they get better. Just be patient. Easiest way through is alternate SACD/Red Book discs, put the player on repeat and let it run 24/7.

The Bryston is rated out to over 100KHz...so no problem for the amp. (nt), posted on November 25, 2000 at 13:09:54

Go custom and don't look back. Turn everything off first.

Just tried out my SCD-777ES with the switch set to Custom.

I did not hear a dramatic change to be honest. I am not sure if there was supposed to be, but I did not hear any audible differences at all. Perhaps my neighbors dog appreciates jazz now?? :)

I'd suggest revisiting the Custom/Standard comparison after 400 or so hours of SACD section break-in. At that point you may hear more "air," more ambient cues, and a truer timbral rendering of instruments, etc., in Custom. That's what I hear, at least.

I have only about 150 hours on the player now....trying to be patient :) 400 is a long way to go.. !! But worth the wait I have read.
