don't shoot me if it doesn't happen.

a fellow marantz sa-1 owner that sells high end audio locally just heard this from his marantz rep. the dealer he works at doesn't sell any sacd products at this time. even though this definitly is at the rumor stage only at this time this person and this marantz rep have some credibility with me.

it does sound possible. sony definitly has the catalogue to do it and may feel its do or die time for sacd. i wonder if they have the disc making capacity to do it.

my personal opinion is that i am HIGHLY skeptical; but we can dream can't we. i just thought that i should share this and see if anyone else has heard anything.

david robinson?

steve hoffman?

any rumblings?

Sounds very silly to me. 20 maybe. Don't even believe that!

Hmmm...this isn't the first time that I've heard this rumor rumbling about, Mikel. I also heard it from a stronger than average source.

I'm checking into this with my sources at Sony; will let you know what they have to say (on the record!).

Much as I'd like to believe this, this would be a remarkable achievement on Sony's part. *If* this is true, of course, it'll vastly change the picture for *audiophile* quality hi-res digital....

Can you put us in the ballpark, Steve? Any titles you can give us for certain yet?

Re: How many should we expect from DCC?, posted on November 24, 2000 at 15:04:26
SACD's on DCC: Blood Sweat & Tears (second album); Loggins & Messina/Sittin' In; Spirit/Twelve Dreams of Dr. S. and a bunch more when they are finally cleared. First quarter, I hope! SH

Hi Steve,

Fantastic choices! I'll buy all three as well. I love all of the early L&M stuff, and I wondered when someone would do them justice. My 12 dreams LP is all scratched up from a bizillion times around the spindle, so that is a must also.

I have an 777es on order--due to be here next week--and I wasn't so sure I'd done the right thing until now.

Gary

BTW, I own several of your gold disks, and they kick a__!
If you are interested enough to hear my requests, please send me your email address. Thanks.

Hi Steve!

Would it be imaginably viable that DCC would re-master and release on SACD some of the excellent titles by Sergeo Mendes and Brasil 66 from the 70s? There is a resurgence of interest in this music, and the appeal and energy still hooks listeners in a strong way. The sound quality of these albums are also very good.

How about "Light the Light" by Seawind, that timeless and venerable Jazz Fusion classic from the late 70s?

It certainly sold well and still has a lot of fans. I recently bought a remastered CD of this title. I found the music just as infectious as when it was first released, and the sound quality is very good, which might place it as an excellent candidate for your remastering talents and for SACD release.

This is interesting. Perhaps this explains the bottleneck of SACD
releases from other labels. In response to a recent inquiry to
Telarc about the slow releases of Telarc SACD titles I received an
explanation saying that there was only one SACD factory worldwide and
that all labels basically had to stand in line to have SACD releases
pressed. I read in Grammophone Magazine some months ago that more
SACD factories were about to come on line. Has this occurred?

Come to think of it Sony is the only SACD label that I am aware of that releases SACD only discs. I understand that it is far less complicated to produce SACD only discs than hybrid discs. Any comments? Does Sony utilize its own dedicated SACD only factory which would enable it to produce a whopping 2000 titles in short order.

The real bottleneck is that Sony still has to bring the mastering equipment from studio to studio. Needless to say, I'm sure Sony has a few units for their own use.

That's right Myles, It's really a weird situation. Sony is going to ship DCC the DSD Mastering gear along with the master tapes, but I'll feel like the 20th stop on a roadshow tour of "South Pacific". Sloppy seconds and all that!

It looks like the bottlenecks are multi-faceted. Below is the text of
a recent email I recieved from Telarc refelecting there perception
of the problem. Tim Parrott of Chesky also sent me an email voicing
similar concerns; that is, that they have SACD mastered projects completed (about a half dozen) but they can't get them pressed (manufactured) in a timely manner.

I had written Telarc because I noticed a number of classical DSD recordings, such as Mahler's First were being released as CDs but not as SACDs. The email response (vebatium) from Telarc follows:

"Dear Robert,

Thanks for writing to Telarc and for inquiring about SACD! We do plan on
releasing the majority of our DSD recordings as SACDs. Currently, there is
only one manufacturing plant in the world capable of pressing the SACD.
Every record label in the world interested in releasing SACDs is on a
waiting list with this plant. This is the reason for the delay in our SACD
release schedule, including the McCoy Tyner recording, which has been
backordered. In the near future, we expect another plant to open. This
will most definitely increase the availability of SACD recordings in the
marketplace in 2001. For future information on our SACD recordings, I
would recommend that you register to receive our monthly email newsletter.
You can do so by typing in your email address in the left hand sidebar of
our website's homepage.

I hope this helps address some of your concerns. Rest assured, we are
confident and excited about the possibilities that SACD will provide in
achieving the quality you have come to expect from Telarc.

Sincerely,
Marlene"

I finally got the McCoy Tyner direct from Telarc a few days ago. It
is very good indeed!

I definitely have great anticipation for more Sony SACD releases.
But as much as I enjoy the music of the 30 or so Sony SACD releases
that I own I find that the 20 or so SACD releases from the independent
labels are technically better (closer to live), if only because they are more modern recordings and perhaps because many (most) are original DSD recordings. Also, all the ones I have seen have been hybrid discs. So whether the delays are due to mastering
or manufacturing or both I hope they are dealt with soon.

Does anyone know if Sony planning on releasing originally recorded DSD classical and jazz discs? Does Sony plan on releasing any hybrid discs soon?

Thanks for sharing the email from Telarc.

they may be technically better, but it may be a matter of polarity. Have you tried inverting the polarity of your system when listening to the Sony SACDs?

I believe the Perahia SACD of Bach's concertos due next week is a new recording, and other new releases like the Zebrahead? and others may be too. Likewise the Yo Yo Ma released last year. In Japan, some Tony Williams has been released which I believe was a DSD recording, and Sony is releasing others newly recorded in Japan, including Mahler's 2nd. I would think Sony would start releasing hybrid discs someday. my working hypothesis on why they have not is because they want to encourage sales of their SACD units while there is limited choice of SACD players on the market. It may not be to their advantage to release hybrids, which could hold up production and encourage people to build SACD collections without buying a Sony SACD player. If this is true, I would not expect hybrids from them for a while.

The notion of only one SACD pressing factory worldwide might explain why the Chesky SACD sampler was delayed. I still have mine on back order from Acoustic Sounds. After hearing Rebecca Pidegon's The Raven, I can't wait to get the sampler.

Steve, since Sony seems to be dribbling out its Columbia titles, I was hoping we could look to DCC for some SACDs of other labels' material. Some Prestige titles would be nice, for example. Any chance of SACDs of non-Columbia/Sony stuff?
