I have a pair of Audeze EL-8 i'm using with my Ipad. I downloaded the app for the Cipher lightning cable. I got it to work, but can't get the volume LOW enough! The volume increments are too large. I start at zero(no sound) and going up just one click with the cable puts me above my listening level....too darn loud. I tried the volume button on the ipad and also the slider volume within iTunes and they do the same thing - big jumps and too loud. I made a preset in the equalizer function, setting all the frequencies sliders to minimum and that brought it down, but it's right on the edge of unlistenable and still over the top for certain recordings. The volume works fine through the standard headphone cable/jack. I contacted the company, but they recommended some ipad setting changes which had no effect. I wonder if the iPhone has the same issue. Can anybody help?

A couple odd things with these headphones, in addition to being a bit heavy. They have a great open sound, but I'm looking for something 'smoother' and non-harsh so I might try something else.

I recently bought a pair of Koss ESP/950 electrostatic headphones and they sound exceptionally nice to me. They seem to be very dynamic and detailed, yet smooth and musically pleasing. You might want to check them out. I bought mine through Amazon for $681.57 total and they sound like a thousand dollars to me.

Hi John,

Those look interesting. Is the 'Electrostatic Energizer' unit just to drive the electrostatics, or does it also act as a headphone amp?

I believe it also acts as a headphone amplifier and is an integral part of the whole. You can't use the headphones without it and the audio signal goes through it. I'm told you can substitute a Stax headphone energizer by using an adapter plug. I've also been told the Stax energizer sounds better, but I'm completely happy with the sound quality of the Koss energizer.

Good luck,
