I just read an article yesterday in Business Insurance regarding the potential for a further breakdown of international shipping. It seems that, worldwide, only 2.5% of crew members on cargo ships have been vaccinated. It is even worse for Fillipino crew -- the largest single source of crew in the world (250,000) -- they have only a 1% vaccination rate. It seems that, with the now faster spreading Delta variant, there is a lot of concern in the shipping industry that things could collapse in a major way in short order.

While we've been lucky in the US to have a good supply of effective vaccines, that isn't true for much of the rest of the world. And we are still heavily dependent on them getting and keeping things under control.

I ordered a Schiit Vali2+ to help pass the time while recuperating in a knee-length cast. Wait time was 60 days due to supply issues. Too bad, the cast is coming off in four days.

Shipping companies can force crew to get vaccinated. And they should do so.

Shipping companies can vaccinate their crews. Not require it, just do it themselves.

A cruise line is suing Florida for their law that says you can't require vaccinations. They want all passengers vaccinated because they have a lot to lose if outbreaks happen on ships.

I'm working on a new charger base for an electronic healing device I invented. I tried to order some simple power supply ICs from name brand manufacturers. 52 week lead times!!!!! Insane.

One thing you missed is that much of the shipping industry is outside of the US. Many areas of the world don't have enough access to vaccines nor the systems in place to effectively administer what little they do have. I believe there is some effort to make vaccines available if a ship docks in the US, but that leaves out much of the industry, and even if they do dock here, it may be months between stops. Here in the US, we have been very fortunate to have available a generous supply of vaccine and the systems in place to distribute it. Many areas of the world we depend on for making the things we buy aren't so lucky and there is a limit to the US's ability to fix things for them.

This is not just a supply chain issue outside the US, Union Pacific announced a couple days ago that it is suspending intermodal shipments to its Chicago terminal for five days to clear up the backlog there. The major problem is a lack of trucks to move the shipping containers out of the terminal. Other railroads have had similar suspensions.

And, there is also a shipping container issue -- not really a "shortage" in the normal sense, but the units are in the wrong spots and not available where they are needed. This is left over from all the Covid shutdowns and other shipping delays.

Artemus, point well taken but in my opinion we can't leave Goebbels out of the discussion. Without propaganda to unify public opinion, I don't think tyrants would have a chance
