Sgt. Pepper's was closer to WWII than today is to the Vietnam War--or The Gulf War, for that matter.

I still remember the first time I heard this record. It was after school with a few friends visiting Horton in his room. He had a couple of AR speakers, a Garrard turntable, Dynaco PAS preamp and ST-70 amplifier. I was truly stunned by the music and the way the stereo revealed so much detail and bass. I guess it changed my life as I went on to get a job as a grease monkey for the summer and in the fall I bought some AR speakers, Garrard turntable and the new Dynaco SCA-80 kit which I put together in my parents basement.

Cool about the kit!

I can still remember the first time I heard it. Still holds up for me, like all Beatles albums do. Yeah, I feel old.

I just played the 50th anniversary CD the other day. The best sounding version I've heard, along with my Japanese LP. IMHO.

Best regards, Ralph

Played my 50th anniversary edition last night to test my new Schiit Vali2+ headphone amp. It is still amazing.

I would put the emphasis on The Great War. Depends on one's values I guess.

very different music.
If one didn't like early Beatles hits, consistency means the Kinks, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Chad & Jeremy, and all other Brit Invasion bands also disliked? Kind of amazing!

I want to take the point of view of someone who is traveling in time.
That is an astounding fact, a fact that speaks to the complexity and power of memory,
and to the awesomeness of the Beatles and G. Martin.

Please allow me a personal reflection on time and history: in the year I was born, there were
at least three documented cases of men still alive who had served in the Civil War. If you think
that St. Pepper has made you feel a bit vintage...

We were more on the Beatles, Herman's Hermits, Paul Revere, Mamas and Papas, Beach Boys, etc. side.

My friend in HS turned me on to the Stones, but I still couldn't believe how the Beatles matured from silly love songs to real depth and complexity of the music.

Anyway, the Stones got me into the blues with Mayall and all that invasion.

I think that POV does a good job a providing a perspective that the Civil War wasn't that long ago and how families can be an impediment to social evolution.

Your point is a good one, and I have used it with students to try to stress those same points.
I think they just come away from it thinking I am a walking mummy.

In my little micro world view there was a time when the Beatles were the best band ever, my favorite band of all time, and 4 or 5 of their records were on my top 10 favorite album list. This was around 1970 when I was 12. According to wiki the last civil war vet died in 1956.

The Beatles, sometimes call Hey Jude, is a comp that wasn't even on my list of favorite Beatles album of all time in 1970 (not sure if it had even been released) is my favorite Beatles record of all time now.

FF to 2021. In my little micro world view the Beatles might still reign as the best band ever (but not so clearly so), they might not be on my favorite bands of all time top 10 list (if they are they barely get on it) even though I have a greater respect for what they accomplished, and it's questionable if even my favorite Beatles LP would be on my top 20 favorite records of all time list.

interesting, in that world wars are without question of significance to everyone, and that album also had a significant, although much lesser, impact, but only to the English speaking world.

I wouldn't say one is really old unless one has albums, as I do , with the Fresnel lens effect on the front picture, from both the stones and the Beatles.

As a matter of fact, I have two copies of the Beatles album, the plastic on one got a little beefed, I felt it detracted from the image, so I strolled down to the local record store and got a less battle proven copy for a couple of bucks, no sweat.

Talk about being old, stories like that prove it.
