ATTENTION "HUCKLEBERRY FRIENDS"! With my latest blog post (The Tannhäuser Gate) I bid a warm but not dangerously hot welcome to "Moonriver Audio," of Malmo, Sweden, and their firstmost product, the Moonriver Audio Model 404 Stereo Integrated amplifier. The review starts out: The Moonriver Audio Model 404 is a solid-state stereo integrated amplifier with a rated output of 50 Watts per channel. The Model 404 combines a preamplifier stage that consists entirely of discrete devices (and therefore, there are no integrated-circuit chips in the preamplifier), and a power-amplifier stage that is Class A/B linear (and therefore, the Model 404 is not a Class-D digital-switching amplifier). But I quickly shift gears to: The company name of Swedish high-end-audio newcomer "Moonriver Audio" is a tribute to the song "Moon River," from the Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) film Breakfast at Tiffany's. "Moon River" won for Henry Mancini (music) and Johnny Mercer (lyrics), the 1962 Academy Award ("Oscar") for "Best Original Song." (The screenplay was based on a novella by Truman Capote. He cried all the way to the bank.) And from there, I spend a lot of time not just obsessing about, but also imparting information of value about, "Edda van Heemstra"(read the review)/"Audrey Hepburn." For me, the real revelation was that Audrey Hepburn's humanitarian work so inspired fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, that in 2006, he donated the only surviving made-for-the-movie "Little Black Dress" to Dominique Lapierre, to auction off for the poorest of the poor. The dress was hammered down for more than $900,000, and the Lapierres used the proceeds to build a school in Calcutta. Along the way, I tell of Audrey's rough ride in the music biz; but she still ended up in the "EGOT" club. And, yeah, the Moonriver Audio Model 404 Stereo Integrated Amplifier wins my "Highest Recommendation." jm (Of course, I have no business relationship with Moonriver or its importer. I just wanted to share my research about Ms. Hepburn.) |

She was superb in the under-rated Robin and Marian with Sean Connery. :) |
