I have a pair of speakers for sale and someone who says they're in London wants to buy them but wants me to send them (after payment clears) to MyUS. A quick look on the website passes the sniff test but I haven't read of anyone here using it; in fact I only found 3 search returns on all forums relating to MyUS.

I don't have an issue sending them there as long as I don't have to do any extra leg work other than taking them to UPS and them sending them to MyUS.

The issue for me is method of payment. I'm hesitant with paypal with someone in another country, ie they get the speakers and then challenge paypal in a manner other than honorable. Although I would accept a money order and not ship until it clears (ditto for check). Bank to bank transfer is another option.

Request such as "I'm sending you extra for your troubles, send me the difference" type request are obviously scams although I haven't seen it in this case...yet

One red flag (at least for me) is he's only been a member of USaudiomart for a few days although that's required to send messages through them.
I've asked if he's a member of ebay, Audio Asylum, Audiogon, etc., and haven't gotten a reply back as of yet.

I'm 95% leaning towards not doing the sale but just curious if anyone here's used MyUs.

Not sure it's called that anymore. Have used it to buy gear from people I trust.

No fees and but one can't have their money back because it is not related to a transaction.

Everything else is questionable even money orders and even if the money clears the bank. Something happens and the bank that 'cleared' it tells your bank, 'sorry it was a forgery' then your bank can take the money back from your account. This can and has happened weeks after the transaction.

Saw a company in Europe lose about $100,000 this way on a phony letter of credit with a company in the old Soviet Union. Money was in his bank account for nearly a month before it disappeared.

When he complained to his bank they accused HIM of attempting to defraud them!

So you don't trust folks but are hoping they send you cash, check or money order?

If someone doesn't trust me enough to take Pay Pal or a credit card forget about it.

Actually I never mentioned cash but yeah; that would definitely seal the deal on my end.

To even consider this. Never ship outside the lower 48 - it's a recipe for disaster. You don't need the grief.

Seriously dude... it's a huge risk doing business with private buyers overseas.

I guess the main reason China is becoming the #1 world power is because more and more US people are thinking like you. :-((

You are only 95% for not selling it to him. Why not 100% and sell it in the US? What speakers are they? I understand your curiosity about MyUS and all.

I think the real issue for now is the lack of feedback on forums you trust. I've successfully sold gear to people in Norway, Germany and Thailand and bought gear from Singapore but I went ahead with those transactions only because of perfect feedback over a reasonable period of time.

Even for bookshelf speakers, and I didn't check to see what you're selling, I would expect shipping costs to be prohibitive. Manufacturers can ship in bulk but a private sale means a single pair. That's a long way from SoCal to London. ;^)

I disagree about sending outside the 48 states. I once ran an ad stating I only would send in the 48, but wound up sending to Italy because I got paid via bank transfer. No Ebay or Paypal to intervene for the buyer, and no fake checks to deal with. He just wanted me to mark the packages as used audio equipment, which they were, to save some taxes I suppose. Went without a hitch. In this instance, it seemed there was no gamble for me, but there was some for the buyer who understood that. I'm glad he was persistent! Trust your gut, and consider the bank transfer as the payment method.

no financial accountability across international borders for individual transactions.

NONE. You will have absolutely no recourse when you get scammed unless perhaps you go through ebay or some other entity that will support you.

No government institutions will help you.

If you do accept a money order or check you need to wait an additional 2 weeks to make sure the payment really clears.

The first clearing step only ensures that the check/money order is supposedly authentic. You have to wait until the bank that it is written on actually pays the funds before you are OK.

It is an old scam where someone sends a check/MO and after it initially clears they expect the goods.

Of course if you are familiar with this I am sure you will exercise the appropriate caution. The fact that its likely a foreign bank adds another delay in processing the payment.

I have sold goods to others in foreign countries but you have to be prepared to wait the time it takes for payment to completely process.

The last time I had a buyer in Greece it turned out to be a scam and the money order was bogus. It initially cleared but failed when it reached the bank who was supposed to issue the MO.

Be careful!
