Finally got the Massive Passive installed. Check back in a few months (years?) when I know how to get the most out of it. The first hour of playing with it is *very* encouraging. I wanted to make these current production Tannoys sound more like their vintage stuff, with a little fuller upper bass and the highs tamed by a couple dB. I could have just bought vintage Tannoy, but I've got these and like 'em. What they do well they do *very* well. Yes, the wires will get hidden.

The manual, which is on their site, is only 30-some pages, but they're pretty dense. There is also lots of shared expertise over on Gearslutz.

Hi, Bill,

Wow, just wow. That's a beast of an "equalizer" and after reading about it on the Manley website my Schiit Loki Mini seems more like a Loki Micro. :-)

One thing I found interesting is that Manley uses four bands of equalization as does the Loki Mini. Obvious difference is that each of the bands in the Massive can be configured to a specific segment and steepness curve. Mind boggling customization.

Have a blast with that Massive Passive. It looks like you could easily spend years experimenting with settings.

Tom

this was not meant for home audio but for recording studios & mastering facilities, but we are all jealous as it's really nice for its surgical precision and transparency. There are other such EQ's but this one is made to Manley standards. Cello had one and a few others as well.

I've found that most recordings, even some classical, need a bit of EQ that was deficient from the mastering house. But most importantly it's a great tool for the playback system in the home setup. Nothing and nobody is perfect except the live performance soundwise but we all know that.

I'm just sayin'

Why is it named "Massive Passive" when it has active circuitry using six tubes?

The EQ circuitry is passive. The available amplification, which uses tubes, is there to deliver the input level at the outputs regardless of how much EQ cutting is applied. And it is pretty massive at 21 pounds. EveAnna says it got the nickname "Massivo" as they lugged it around the factory during its development.

Technics by Panasonic SH-9010.

This unit did a nice job for me back in the 70s when I was applying EQ to my Dead and Pink Floyd concert tapes. I don't think there were many parametric EQs back then.

I hooked it up a few weeks ago and still works fine. I just might slip it into a system for the hell of it.

Hi Bill,

I believe EveAnna still uses Tannoys in her personal system.

A good friend has the big Tannoys in his system and that is one of the most enjoyable I've ever heard.

these are very nice EQ's and its my main EQ in my system. I do have the Schiit LOKI which is a nice little parametric as well, Would be nice if Schiit made one with more bands to it.

please take note that the Loki is NOT a parametric EQ.

Each band is centered and the bandwidth changes from wide to narrow as each control is advanced or cut.

The SAE is old school but very useful for some purposes.

Its not a normal EQ as per say Graphic. There was a forum that showed it's act like a parametric.

The guy has measurements that show how the bands are are actually working.

I will try to find the link for the review and post it back here.

I found this video on the Steve Hoffman forum. This one guy explains about how wide the Q is on the 20hz control and how it affects the 100hz as well.
