It's been a while since we started upgrading the web servers to support the newer TLS 1.3 for secure connections. You've likely noticed a caution by the lock in the URL bar or have gotten warnings. It's not that the old TLS 1.1 is insecure, it's just that it's time to upgrade.

We had done the upgrade for the Trader and the Search server some time ago. Moving the main web site is quite a bit more complicated as it requires building a new web server, updating all the software and libraries and creating scripts to sync the two servers. We are very close to having everything resolved and tested.

To start this transition, we'll be moving the Search server. Since it handles a great amount of traffic, this will be a good test to be sure that the new server is running as expected. So if you see any issues later today with search, let me know so I can either fix it or roll back to the old server.

If all goes well, then we'll move the Trader and the Secure (Contributions) apps followed by the Gallery. Finally, we'll move the balance over, probably next week.

Thank you for your support and wish us luck.

After a little configuration tweak, the Search has been moved. Let's hope it continues to bang along well.

We'll work on the Gallery and others tomorrow and then should be ready for the big move. Let me know if you see anything odd.

Thanks for the support.

Seems on my MacBook Pro, right click no longer allows for spell checking in the body of a message even though the misspelled word is underlined in red as it should be. Same for copy and past?

Email and documents work fine still so I'm guessing it's something in the AA interface?

Or my browser?

I haven't moved or changed anything on the main web server. Only the Trader, Search and Contributions have been moved and they were running on another server. My plan is to let this new one run for a few days to be sure it's stable and whatnot. Then, I can move the main web server over.

On your problem, I can only guess that if you spell as badly as I, then the misspelling is likely so bad that even the spell check can't guess what it should be.

Yes, and let me count the ways that Apple can make my life difficult. We're moved to Catalina on the new server and the 'new' security that doesn't allow root to be root has been a major pain. Perhaps the worse part is that they've decided in their infinite idiocy, that a mail.log is not needed by anyone.

On the upside, the new version of the graphics package now has an auto-rotate function, so we won't have sideways of upside down images uploaded anymore. That's already working on the Trader. I've also got a new 2018 model i7/16GB/500GB SSD mini that I'm using for testing and plan to move into the pack eventually. It does seem to be a bit quicker.

Many OS's are locking down security like never before. There's a principle called 'least privileged' that Solaris implemented a decade ago and many others have adopted over the years.

I also have a 2018 Mac Mini configured as i7 6-Core/16GB/1TB - which is the same model being sold today except for a slight price drop on SSD. I bought mine in 2019.

Thanks for keeping the Asylum in top shape!

Well, I don't like having a protected 'read-only' volume. Apple's System Integrity Protection is a major pain. It makes things like changing SSH ports nearly impossible and lots of other little things. You can get around it with a special boot procedure and mounting the drive manually, but that doesn't work for Catalina as the recovery drive is Mojave!

We also partition the data drive to format it in case sensitive mode for legacy reasons and then create a symbolic link for a data dir like /web or whatever. Finding the new 'Apple way' to do that took days.

I get the whole idea of protecting users from themselves. Many problems are created by user error, so it can reduce support if users can't screw it up. Still, the idea that root is not root is a bit too far for me.
