Hi. I have an older model power amp that works very well with my speakers (see pic). However it doesn't have a remote trigger input or even a power switch! I'm ditching my receiver that had been handling power switching in favor of a Cambridge Audio Azur 851N, which doesn't have a trigger output.
Are there some good options for IR-based power switches? This would be perfect but I'm pretty sure it's discontinued: http://simerec.com/zapper.htm
Edit: Sorry I'm not sure if this is the correct subforum. Maybe it should be in pre/amp. Mods feel free to move.

Your amp has a trigger input, so it's just a matter of supplying a low voltage DC input via a (remote) switch or other device. No need to turn on/off the amp via AC.

Something like this would work, or you should be able to find a more robust product designed for home theater that has IR input and 12v DC outputs.

Or, you can buy a current sensing power strip that will turn on all outlets when you turn on your music streamer (or other device that has a remote).

Trigger Inputs

Voltage Range 5 - 18VDC
Impedance Approx. 600ohms
Turn-On Current 20mA @ 12V

Unless I'm missing something my amp does NOT have a trigger input. I had included a pic in the original post but it seems to be gone now.

I followed your link and looked at the spec sheet.

Regardless, the current sensing power strip suggestion will still work.

Even with the Cambridge unit on standby all the time? I'm not going to turn it off between uses.

Should work. I use this unit to turn on my powered speakers when my TV is turned on (which is in standby when off).

Try one and let us know. Good luck.

I bought one of these for a similar application.

Yeah I'll give this one a shot http://a.co/dMGF6ga
It's the only one without a boatload of negative reviews. Tripp Lite is based here in Chicago, so that's a bonus too.
I'll report back once it's all here and setup. Thanks!

Hi Chichaz,

I have the same amp (Sunfire 300) and have been looking for the same kind of switch, but everything I've seen on Amazon has a rating of 10 amps or less. I'm sure the amp would work with one of these switches playing at moderate volume, but I'd like to find something that supports 15 or 20 amps. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know.

Thank you!
Markl

If you read my first response, the one I suggested has a load rating 15A. The bigger problem with these current sensing switches is that your control device needs to pull sufficient current to operate properly. For this reason some of them have user-adjustable sensitivity.

Actually the Simerec I referenced in the original post will be back in stock next month. I plan on picking up two. I'll update this thread when they're available.

A power sequencer: Filters the mains power, switches all your gear on in a sequence and with delay chosen by you and all by remote control.

The ones in the link are available in UK shops at £275 but I'm sure you can get them or similar stateside.

I wanted to followup and say that I found a 15 amp remote switch that works great. I don't have any complaints yet. The remote is surprisingly responsive.

Best Buy used to sell one made by Rocketfish that works pretty well, I have two. Only use it to make things easier on the little lady, one button to turn all the equipment on. A Harmony remote will also work but a bit more expensive. Only problem I found with the master control power strip is my Carver pre doesn't draw enough juice for the power strip to sense so I plugged the tuner into the Carver's rear utility outlet. This way when the pre is energized the extra draw of the tuner triggered the power strip.

Yes, making it easier on the wife was definitely a consideration!

The Tripp Lite I referenced a few posts back works great I'm happy to say! I'm using the 851Ns standby mode instead of the network standby mode to save power. Perhaps I'll try the other when I plan to be home more often.

Nice - using the tuner piggy-backing on the preamp was a great idea, Martin!
