 I recently downloaded it to my HTC phone, and although it works ok to ID songs, I'd prefer something that doesn't spam me.

Any suggestions?

 The only real alternative is Shazam..... But I prefer SoundHound.

 i prefer BOTH. sometimes when one can't identify the tune, the other can.

 I actually use both as well.... I just get better results with Hound.
