it seems so. i hope they are as transparent as they once were. i had one of their pre/pros and it was plate glass/crystal clear so that anything passed through it suffered NO audible degradation.

..they've completely abandoned their 2-channel heritage.

The folks looking to buy the type of products they now sell will be wholly unfamiliar with the B&K name.

I wish them luck.

Dean.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

I'm currently running a B&K Ref 200.2 that drives my Maggies extremely well. I wish they hadn't bailed on the 2 channel stuff. It would have been nice to have a service department for their older stuff which I would bet they won't touch now.

they used to be in buffalo new york but the parent company, API took them to canada. it MAY be the same people. or NOT. a communication with them would be wise.

Is that the API of recording studio console fame? Thanks.

No, it's Audio Products International. Which is now owned by Klipsch.

Thanks! Much appreciated.

On the topic of name/acronym uncertainty, I should note for readers that the B&K discussed in this thread is not the same company as the Brüel & Kjaer (B&K) professional sound/vibration measurement instrumentation company headquartered in Denmark, and for which AA inmate BigGuyInATL works.

I'd always thought it to be a little tacky for a hifi company to ride on the name recognition coattails of a world-reknown instrumentation company. Now, they've also got "API", which is unrelated to the API that professional audio engineers know.

Thanks again for the info.

:)

API is also American Petrolium Institute. Maybe something else as well. Who knows.

RE: API?, posted on March 16, 2017 at 10:48:00
Hahahaha! Good one.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure nobody will confuse the American Petroleum Institute with two other APIs in a whole different industry, nor two B&Ks in audio with the B&K plumbing and faucet company.

But, hey, as long as we're on API, it's also an acronym for "application programming interface".

I really wonder why the sole photo on the home page is of a couch, a coffee table, a dying plant, and two dirty glasses.

Now we will be getting (Again) calls directed to them - and they will be getting calls directed to us... Again.

Use to happen regularly...

I do wish them prosperous sales...

My Son is still using a B&K Pro-5 preamp and a B&K ST-140 amplifier, that I bought new in 1988.
Still going strong.
Probably due for a recap about now though.

it's probably why they sound so good, no more parts than it takes to do the job well.

One of very few reasonably priced amps stable into a 2 ohm load. Great design and great sound.

RE: B & K Audio has come back from the dead?, posted on March 17, 2017 at 12:58:46
I listened to the old B&K ST-140 quite a bit back in the day. Always thought that they were great products, especially in the "bang for the buck" department, but they more than held their own when compared to the competition at sometimes two to three times the price.

They were also very successful in the HT end of the business, which could explain why they weren't more popular with the 2-channel crowd. They really should have attracted more of a following in the 2-channel segment of our hobby than they did. A case of guilt by association?

Now, does this new venture have anything more to do with the B&K of the past other than appropriating the name? At this point I expect not!

Cheers,
SB

I disagree. Small stuff in big box.. May be very high quality small stuff., posted on March 17, 2017 at 13:00:40
The size of the box is usually a consumer driven thing.
Having the same size boxes throughout the line..
The circuit board and the stuff on it can be pretty small. Or really stuffed with endless crap.

it is quite possible that the new company is the descendant of the original. whether they honor warranties is a question. as the company lives on, i think they will go back to the kind of business they did before.

Points to consider;
where is the gear made?
will they provide Customer Service for older products?

Audio Power Industries as well. Not sure what happened to them, but they garnered a name for themselves in the early days of audiophile power conditioners. Remember the PowerWedge? Good ol' Les Edelberg and company...

I used an ST 202 for years with my Spica TC 50s. An excellent combination.

Nothing but fond memories of my ST-140... which I bought from Tom Gillette.

Some of you may recognize that name.

Dean.

Which name? ST-140 or Tom? :)

An ST-140 was my first "audiophile" purchase...a purchase based mostly on Sam's high praise for it. Moved up to an EX-442 from that, which traded some of the 140's politeness for some balls. Then I tried a tube amp....

"hifitommy, thanks for your interest in the new B&K. I say "new" because the old company ceased operations in 2010. We purchased the brand last year and are re-launching with a focus on custom installation. I won't say we're not pursuing stereo, but it's not the focus of our re-launch. But please continue to follow us ... we take the legacy of the brand very seriously.
