Thanks to our intellectually-gifted, practically-minded, and financially-generous inmates, the Asylum has grown to be a valuable resource to audiophiles all around the globe.

Since March 1999, literally 7,924,588 posts have been made as of noon today. As these posts are archived, an amazing reservoir of knowledge has been collected and stored for the current and future needs of audiophiles around the World. The 'Brain Trust' of the Asylum is truly amazing! Thank you all for your contributions.

Managing this enterprise is no walk in the park. On a typical day, 22,000 to 24,000 people visit the site looking at up to 1.25 million pages of information. While we've made many improvements over the years in terms of software and hardware upgrades, our job is not done and we have an ambitious plan for next year.

As many of you know, the transition from using computers to surf the net to phone and tablets has accelerated. Our site has always been friendlier than many, but it's not a fully responsive site for mobile users. Soon, it will be. Over the past month, we hired expert consultants to help in this endeavor. An initial prototype has been developed and we're in the process of integration, which is no small task.

That's why we need your help. We intend to have a beta version the forums and posting applications done over the next few weeks. Then, we'll ask for your feedback. God knows, we don't want an Orange Monday revolt!

However, moving the forums to a mobile, responsive platform will be just the beginning. We expect that it will take at 6 months and perhaps as long as a year to fully complete this task for all the various apps.

So, today, we're launching our 2016 Year-End Campaign.

Our goal is to generate enough support to kick-off our funding drive for the 2017 calendar year and to catch up on our on-going deficit since investing in preliminary actions, all necessary to prepare for the massive software project this year.

You see, even though we provide a great place for people to learn and share, the bills continue to mount. That's why our goal for phase one of this campaign is to raise $12,000 by January 31. To put that into perspective, if every inmate who used the Asylum's resources yesterday chipped in $5.00, we'd quickly raise that amount (and much more).

If you would be willing to help, you will be a part of making possible for the Asylum to step into 2017 with confidence. With adequate funding to support the software project and needed contractors, we can commit to moving forward.

Update on Contributor gifts: Sadly, we'd run out of both hats and yoyos over the summer. It took too long to replenish the stock. I apologize for the delay. However, new supplies arrived this week and everything has been shipped. If by chance, we owe you a gift and you haven't received it by January 10, 2017, let me know.

I think that you could save some money by not giving out all of the freebies. I know that I must have a drawer full of yoyos. I will contribute, but please keep the Toyota.

Thanks! A lot of people do pick the No Gift option. But, you're right, the cost of postage and packaging is way more than the cost of the yoyo.

Happy New Year, Rod!

As an incentive for new Contributors, is it possible to post large-sized images (within reason) stored on AA servers for use within an Inmate Systems page? My ISP dropped the use of my linked images stored on their servers, which destroyed years of image posting efforts, including linked images that are no longer available on my prior AA posts over the years.

Cheers, Duster

Heisman trophy winner and most prolific college offense held to 3 field goals. Louisville obviously competed on a lesser level to achieve what they did in the regular season. These bowl games tell a story.

Yeah, and Jackson now has lost the last three games. Heisman curse?

But then, the ACC has the most bowl wins with Clemson and Florida St knocking off the top Big 10 teams and even, Miami was impressive.

Let's hope that SC maintains the trend with the Big 10.

Of those 7,924,588 posts, I am happy to take full credit for 34,610 of them! And I got in a couple years late.

Be interesting to know what percentage of visitors contributed what percentage of posts. Guessing a handful of inmates (some sadly deceased) likely were responsible for a lot of the bandwidth consumed here.

Never had much interest in logging on with either a cell phone or iPad and, like many of the old-timers here, I prefer the 'classic' format, the lack of which finally saved my life when the old 'Outside' was kicked 'outside'. Never could follow what was going on using the new interface over at the 'green door' is it?.

A blessing, to be sure.

Perhaps with more modern tools like phones and tablets being used to visit this space, the average age might come down a bit? That would be a good thing.

Just please don't eliminate the 'classic' format. I'd hate to have to crawl back and beg for re-admittance to 'Audio Roundtable' after all of these years. Especially after using 'F-U-Parham' as my original password!

"Windows XT"

Do you mean "NT"?

I have a PC which is still running NT 4 Server. Works like a champ. I use it for my word processing and spreadsheet needs. It's got a Pentium 133 processor and a whopping 128 MB of memory.

I gave $25 which is a fraction of the actual value I have gotten over the years. Soon as I get into better financial circumstances, I will give more! And still won't require anything but the asylum to keep going.

I always forfeit my yoyo and cap because my family already thinks I'm a yoyo.I always give as generously as I can as it's not fair for Rod to do it all being we all benefit from the forum in many ways.We are a family and regardless of our issues even ones not related to audio, our brothers and sisters always seem to be there for us in one way or another. I know this first hand and there is no way you can put a price on that.
I've been around audio for a long time and have joined many forums but this is the only one I ever donate to as it's the only one that has any reciprocal appreciation for our interaction. It's easy to see why we are the largest audio forum and best forum regardless of topic.
Even those that donate 25 dollars or less, one manual or collective help in solving an audio problem more than makes up for it.Keep in mind this is our forum as much as it is Rod's. He's just the poor schmuck that has to keep it going and constantly maintain it for our continued satisfaction. It cost a lot of greenbacks to maintain one of these places, not to mention the countless hours of labor involved.I know I couldn't do it and having more up to date equipment will lighten the load for Rod and the moderators who generously donate their time. So lets help as much as we can. It's the least we can do.

Here, here. What the man said. This is a time when there are many appeals for donations, but don't forget the old Asylum, where the audio addicts can go for info, advice, fellowship, commiseration, and a wild time on New Year's Eve (just kidding about the last).

Happy New Year!

I gave what I can afford and would give more if I could. My question is I want to find an archive of old Water Cooler and Outside posts to try and find old photos I've since lost. Does archive.org or that old website page have them? Sorry to kinda hijack the thread....happy new year.

(and, clearly, I am an Old Guy in all respects, although not utterly technologically unsavvy)

The best thing about AA is its very clean and simple (too simple, I realize, by 21st Century standards) user interface. It hearkens back to the early days of the URL/HTTP internet -- and I mean that as a compliment!

I've always believed/assumed that one of the knock-on benefits of the aforementioned (apparent) simplicity has been extremely fast load and search times. The other, bloated fora have gotten steadily worse in this regard, while (presumably) requiring ever more powerful servers ($$$) and storage space to maintain even a reasonable level of performance.

The aforementioned "modern" s/w sites (I'll refrain from naming names) are also rife with downtime and spam (not to mention some fairly nasty 'adventitious agents' carrying malware & whatnot). AA has been refreshingly immune to most of the above.

I don't doubt that the "backoffice" machinations to make MY "user experience" a pleasantly benign one are extensive -- but let me here and now render my opinion.

Please don't eff it up.

Thank you for the forum and for your attention. Good luck, and Godspeed.

The classic format works very well for those that DO NOT access the site via a smartphone. The classic format works well on my iPad.

Given the likely average age of members, I would suspect that a majority do not want to access this site on a smart phone. However I understand the need to create a smartphone friendly OPTION (not wholesale change) to attract new and maybe younger participants.

I have waded into other forum sites and for the most part their participants bring much more in the way of agendas, vitriol, and bad feeling to discussions than those participating on AA. IMHO AA has evolved to the point where it is "just right".

Change of foundation can also have the unintended consequence of changing the way in which participants interact and eventually the collective tone of the site.

I will contribute, but forgo a bonus.

Thanks for everything.

I agree. In my opinion the internet has been getting progressively worse for many years. I hate auto play video, I hate this fairly new thing where the stupid auto play video follows you around. I hate how pages jump all over the place as they load so you are constantly losing your place. I hate menus that pop up when you move the cursor over them rather than click. I hate how when you get near the bottom of a page it automatically loads a bunch of other stuff. I hate anything that changes without my clicking on it. I gotta think a lot of people feel this way.

Or maybe it was a lottery.

The tubes were the then new perforated mesh 2A3s and a nice upgrade to Paramours.

I've built a lot of stuff since than and couldn't have done it without the Search box. I have a lot of Yo-Yos, orm would have if it weren't for pets and grandkids, but haven't been a contributor the past few years as I had to quit working. All that can should give what they can.

In more or less reverse chronological order, a a good bit but nowhere all I built and much I still have. In 2001 I couldn't have identified a resistor. If you don't look stuff up, shame on you.

You've been generous in the past with supporting recently deceased folk AND survivors of
natural disasters with BENEFIT AUCTIONS/sales held through the classifieds pre Trader.

Why not organize an auction to benefit AA?

I'm low on dough these days but have some audio equipment I''m too fookin' procrastinationg to sell, but WOULD
donate to the Asylum in a benefit FOR the Asylum.

Nothing fancy - some quads of decent, used EL34 and such. The odd cable.

Know this would take additional (valuable) time and organizational verve but with a properly
mapped out time line and some savvy organizers it could prove to be a financial success AND
draw attention/finances from those outside of the usual suspects.

It's Winter and lots of folk are stuck inside with access to computers, lots of folk are cleaning out
closets of accumulated stuff.

Maybe worse case scenario set up a separate section in The Trader where ALL sales therein
benefit Audio Asylum. Speaking of which I doubt anyone in their right mind would
object to paying a flat fee (say that $5.00) to sell any equipment on the Trader at any time.

If you uploaded the images, they're stored in the usr url, but you'd need to know the filename to find them. I just copied them over to a download area, so you can find them here:

I'll delete that directory in a week or so.

The primary change will be the menus which we're struggling to keep as close as possible to the current system where everything is a click away. The current Classic mode uses an html caching of the data making it a bit difficult to modify easily due to the different tags used in a responsive code base.

Therefore, the beta development is oriented on using the Threads view which is already a generated program using cached elements, so it's very fast and yet has the ability to sort the threads to either look just like the existing Classic view or to sort threads based on the last updated to bring the most recently active topics to the top.

Another feature is that the Thread view tracks read posts, so people that use a computer and a tablet can easily see what they're already read on either system.

Anyway, nothing is written in stone, but if you haven't looked at the Tread View in a while, here's a link:

Make a smartphone friendly app but keep the current Asylum options for those of us who access it primarily through our home computers.

I like being able to quickly visualize the thread progression and inmates involved.

I usually make the subject a part of the response which gets kinda lost in other presentations.

It needs to be updated. Until then, is there a message that can be added? I tried it and it wouldn't let me pay to myself.

I did not see a place for a message on the PayPal form. I do see the option on the credit card form. Please do not send a gift.

Of course if possible.

I'm hoping you're considering the v-bulletin style (or whatever the current equivalent is) because as a participant on many online forums, I think it's the least annoying.

I like the classic style of AA but only for nostalgia purposes and of course because it's way better than the other version, which I haven't seen anywhere.

The classic style is fun, but the v-bulletin style allows conversations that are the most interesting stay on top. I know that's also what other AA view does, but in a disjointed hybrid classic/vbulletin style that's just annoying.

I also donated using the PayPal form but didn't see any place to add a message. Anyone else who is donating by PayPal should probably do it the old fashioned way by logging into PayPal and entering your email address.

I also don't need any gifts.

Thank you for your effort. None of it goes back to the days of WC and Outside. I did download several of them. I did find the Way back machine that does however and if someone else pesters you with a similar request refer them there. Sorry but things are too tight now being on disability to give AA more. Hopefully the work and money spent pay off and it's not a here today gone tomorrow. Technology. Well it will be we just don't know when. Instead of redoing everything consider a new home screen only where the users selects the device type being used. The may save $$ and cut down on redesign as you could likely leave a lot the same. On this cheap Android tablet everything is fine. I used to need the Puffin browser to see embeds but the latest Chrome update allows it to see them now too. So you probably only need to redo things for smartphones. Is it worth it for the $$ and the demographic? If I were in your shoes I wouldn't be so sure and I understand fully your motivation to change. Good luck.

Please make ours and your lives easier. Use the same font for the top "header"/ board / action selection as for the messages.

Due to the way non windows devices render / substitute fonts, "header" becomes too small to read/select on any Android device. What is even worse, it works/looks different on the same device in different browsers.

that most of the "old school" folks like us that have voiced our opinions regarding
change is bad (m'kay?) aren't looking to the future.

I think the main focus for changing to newer platform support would be most evident
and useful in the Head forum, and I despise headphones.

But that's the future.

Responsive web design (RWD) is becoming mandatory. Google's search engine lowers the rankings of sites that aren't, not that that's a concern for AA. Incidentally, I strongly prefer the classic view.

https:// could be the next thing, since Google Chrome will be identifying sites that are not secure, and it wouldn't be surprising if their search engine rankings will take that into account as well. Presumably other web browsers will follow.

Actually, we have the statistics.

47.3% Desktops
30.6% Tablets
22.1% Phones

So, over half of the visitors are using mobile devices.

You're right, Brian.

Google has been pushing responsive for at least a year. And I just got a notice that allowing users to login without a secure link will get flagged soon.

as I mentioned several times, our first port for the beta is the Classic view. We're not looking to make crazy changes, but rather to move the code base into the html 5 standards while maintaining the core functionality with as little obvious change as possible.

Please keep the present format for us desktop users who like what we're using. I don't use my i-phone or my tablet for perusing websites.

I was going to make a contribution to the 'site via PayPal until this thread came up. Really! Honest!

Now I'll just wait until I see the results of your proposed changes. It's your 'site so you can do what you wish, but if I feel that the results are detrimental to my enjoyment I won't make any contribution and instead will just stop visiting here.

I believe you're talking about two different things. If you use the Upload link in a message, then images are scaled to be no more than 1,000 pixels, either in width or height.

The Gallery limits images to 800KB.

Absolutely!

We are not going to break what isn't broken. Most of the changes would only show up on the phones with a few possibly on tablets. The objective is to make it work on different devices better while not particularly changing the current UI.

My primary concern is posting embedded images directly on my Inmate Systems page rather than within an image gallery. You will notice many broken images on my Inmate Systems page that were previously stored on my ISPs server.

Not interested in mobile. Watching with certain fear of apps.

Oops, I lied, it's in my desk drawer, probably with a dead battery.

I'll charge it up if I have to pick someone up at the airport when I might need it and I know I won't be with anyone because everyone else have one anyway which means that I don't need mine.

Have you tried finding a pay phone these days?

You make a good case for keeping old disconnected cellphones around. I might have to dig mine up and just keep it in my bug out bag. I -believe- they are capable of dialing 911 for help even if service is disconnected. But if I truly need a bug out bag, I would imagine that civilization as we know it has ended and no one will answer my 911 anyhow. Never mind. ;-)

Yeah, that's Google's idea. If there's is a 'Password' dialog on a page, they flag it that way. I've bought most of the secure certificates and just have to install them and change every single link to be https versus http.

It's really not any big deal at all. See my longer explaination here"
