I've borrowed from a friend a version of Mozart's requiem that comes on a hybrid two layers CD/SACD disc. It's the first time I have one of these at home. The CD layer sounds great on my friend's system, it's a very good recording. Well when I play it at home, it sounds harsh, congested, and just plain weird, with a "white noise-ish" treble. Could it be that my 1990 CD drive (Revox B226, Philips CDM1 mechanic) struggles to read the CD layer? Classical / baroque / choral works have never really been my system's strong suit, but this is barely listenable - yet I really enjoy on it, say, an older version of Carmina Burana that should be just as unlistenable if the system was the cause? |

But he played the CD layer on his friend's system and it sounded great. |

One wonders if he should rub Geritol on the photons. |
