Based on the info I've read here, much of which from Abe Collins, I'm going to try the Raspberry Pi. Generic wallwart will do for now.
I have a USB dac and a couple of SPDIF dacs so I'll need and add-on board if I understand the homework I've done.

Suggestions please from those who have gone this route:
Where to buy the Raspberry?
RAM?
Add-on SPDIF?
enclosure (possibly a screen/monitor)?

Thanks,
W

If you've got a USB DAC, I'd Skip the Top Hat for SPIDF for now, as they are about $100. Try the USB first. You can always add a Top Hat later. A top hat will take a different style case. Forget the Monitor, as you don't need it. I never hooked one up to my Rpi that I have had for 10 years. If you are going to stream Qobuz, I recommend PiCorePlayer as the Plugin is Free. Volumio charges for a Qobuz interface. PiCorePlayer info here - https://www.picoreplayer.org/ You can find the Download software here -- https://www.picoreplayer.org/main_downloads.shtml -- You can use Balena Etcher Program to Flash the OS on your MicroSD Card -- https://www.balena.io/etcher/

So, You need

1.) RPi Model 4 - 2GB is plenty of RAM - https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/new-price-raspberry-pi-4-2gb/
2.) The Wall Wart Power Supply you mentioned.
3.) Micro SD Card - The smallest you can buy - Which I think is about 16GB now
4.) Case of your Choice. I like this one: https://www.c4labs.com/product/zebra-4-interior-fan-case-raspberry-pi-4/

All this can be bought at Amazon for around $80, give or take. If you have a MicroCenter nearby you can get an Rpi 4 for $30

I have helped dozens of people get their Rpies up and running. If you need help just ask...

Thanks for the concise information Cut-Throat.
The USB dac I have is in need of some attention to get up and running. The other dacs I have are ready to play so I'll need a top hat.

Are there different, suggested makes/models of top hats?

Yes there are a few different Hats... Allo Digione and HiFi Berry.... The Allo Digione sounds better. -- https://chicagodist.com/collections/allo/products/digione - I also like the Acrylic Case from Allo also...

The biggest problem with Allo right now is shipping time right now. That is why I gave you a link to a Chicago Dealer...You might have to wait for 2 months from Allo Directly.

Here is a Pic of my Digione One and Case from Allo.
BTW - What DACs do you have with No USB input? -- All of my DACs even the cheapies have USB input.

A DIY DDDAC stacked chip which needs some work to get running.
Another old dac lite AH which I modded the crap out of just blew one of it's chips (TDA1543) and I await replacement from China.

That leaves an old DPA dac from the 90s and a 20$ amazon dac running my small system - 80s Luxman integrated. Both are SPDIF

I'm looking at the Doge 7 recommended from a friend. Open to ideas for a cheapo dac too.

Will I need heat sinks?

I'm on the waiting list for the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B/2GB. I assume this is the correct model?

E30 is pretty sweet sounding on my small system, as it breaks in.
I'll soon play it in the tube system.

interesting tread. thank you ol' pal wheez for the nod.

if I could piggyback please:
- is one typically running these little fellas (raspberry pis) headless? remote in, RDP-like? tiny footprint, but convenience is what I'm looking for
- what's the known compatibility with USB interfaces such as WaveIO? what data stream is possible? 24/192? DSD? data going through true and such?

I personally just got a nano Windows 10 thingie and would be interested in figuring out which of the two should perform my streaming.

thank you all for your input.
