 Assuming I don't have a space issue or safety issue concerns, is there any reason I should not consider powering this device using much cheaper sealed lead acid batteries vs SOtM's mBPS-d2s very convenient yet much more expensive PS?

 I had for a while a MicroRendu and Uptone UltraCap LPS-1. Very convenient, but with SLA 12V\7Ah \Sulzer 5V regulator sound is better. Even better is Cyclon 6V\8Ah battery.

 Nothing wrong with using a SLA battery but NiMH will be 'stiffer' with about 2x the energy density by mass (weighs less, puts out more).

The main disadvantage is that you will need to charge the battery now and then while the SOtM unit has dual batteries inside that alternate between packs while the other is charging automatically.... but $450!?

Or just use a good power supply.

My NiMH batteries, 10Ah & 5Ah, for the microRendu streamer

Dear Tubejack & others

I guess we are getting, finding and inquiring much more about battery-driven options in times ahead.
My new Mytek Brooklyn DAC takes 12 V DC as external input, and I was (and still are) amazed how much improvement there is to battery power.

Most those adventures are DIY, but here in Germany I found one (1 !) readymade battery solution with charger, indicators and over/under load protection.

It sounds phenomenal !

It can feed the DAC for about 20 hours on one load and I leave it to charge overnight. Pretty much no problem.

Highly recommended.

 I don't have any battery powered audio equipment, but have been tempted. My experience is with electric bikes. Nano LiPo's are my favorite, but NiCad's can be a cost effective, low impedance, long-life, alternative to SLA's. They are more forgiving than NiMh which don't do well unless they are maintained within relatively narrow charge/discharge range. The industry has moved away from NiCad's due to the toxicity of cadmium so the best place to find them is NOS and discharged they have a long shelf life.

With that stated, SLA's are cheap, but most don't like to be discharged below 80% voltage level.
