I found a very strange file type restriction on Marantz SA8005 manual.

MP3
(.mp3)
Sampling frequency : 32 / 44.1 / 48 kHz
Bit rate : 32 kbps to 320 kbps

So far it looks typical.

Now I see something very strange.

AAC
(.m4a)
Sampling frequency : 32 / 44.1 / 48 kHz
Bit rate : 64 kbps to 192 kbps

Why only up to 192 kbps on a $1,199.00 machine?

As the machine offers >320KS/s for other formats it cannot be a limitation in the processing ability of the DAC itself.

My guess is that , aside from the possibility of a misprint, the answer may lie in the history of the AAC codec. it may well be that when the SA8005 was designed and built the AAC protocol was limited to a maximum of 192KS/s.

Why listen to that when it does DSD, and is a lot cheaper now?, posted on March 15, 2017 at 13:38:10

HQ and probably AV+ will upsample the aac to DSD.
8005 is around $600 now at Music Direct.
It wasn't worth the $1200 original price tag, but at the cheaper price, it's a good choice.
Does Internet radio too.

Marantz HD-DAC1 (which I purchased) does DSD over a USB-C connection from a computer, and it has an excellent headphone amp (but no CD drive). I bought a reconditioned one from Music Direct--very happy with it.

It's The 8005 DAC That's Discounted, Not The SACD Player. nt, posted on March 17, 2017 at 21:16:49

I can't find much mention of AAC Codec above 96kbps.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass
