 ....seriously considering the purchase of this used model on ebay, but is there an integrated one box player new or vintage that sounds better for about £4000 UK pounds.

 A terrific player of its vintage. My big reservation is with the transport and the availability of spares particularly the optical pickup unit which is basically a consumable. At the time it was produced the optimum life for lasers in CD players was estimated at around 10,000 hours. Think about that in relation to a player that was made in 1987.

As for alternatives I am unsure as the problem of current or even short term future OPU availabilty is always in my mind in respect of used players.

 Should not cost 4k. Watch out for lack of spares if you buy vintage

I believe the vintage CD players of yesteryear can yield excellent performance as transports.

This Pioneer PD-91 has always fascinated me- it has such high-drama industrial design and the build quality is completely over-the-top! There is a PD-91 for sale in the L.A. area now for a few hundred $US; it's non-operational but I know a repair wizard... she's only a few $hundred more and a bucket of tears away from working... Same vintage as your Sony pair.

The golden unit is an early Pioneer DVD, the Model DV-AX-10, built to the same insane standard, rarely seen on sale and then for $1000+. Lovely piece, vintage 2002-ish and it spins SACD and DVD-A. I've had good performance from vintage Pio Elite DVD players as music spinners.

You could then choose a modern DAC, unless you're genuinely a connoisseur of the sound of the Philips TDA1541A DAC chips in the Sony- many people were but that was while ago. If the chip's the thing for you, you might invest in an AMR-CD77 (which I only know from reviews and Thorsten Loesch's zeal).

Anyway, a newer DAC might yield better overall sonics, but would not be nearly as beautiful as the Sony pair!

The wizard is in Torrance CA and is non-partisan. Its worth a try if you're in relatively sane driving distance. this isn;t an ad- please consider that I have no connection with this business etcetc... and caveat emptor!

I am considering an older Sony ES spinner and it is good to learn about techs that can service these vintage players. No harm in promoting one's business, especially, if they do excellent work!
