Hi,

I want to experiment with MP3. I have heard that the encoder used to conver the wav file to mp3 matters the most. That the decoder or player is irrelivant.

So which is the best program?

IMHO the best is Frauhofer Pro but I must be honest , I'm really no expert at this , I only tried a few and didnt really compare output much.

You can't download it... You can only buy it. There was a shareware (I forgot the name but I have it somewhere :-)), crappy one but it had Fraunhoffer Pro codec illegally incorporated in it... When the Germans realised that, it was a chase all over Internet to get off all of the copies of this shareware out of circulation, with threats of legal actions etc. Huh, that was a funny week on Internet. I've never heard about this software before this all fuss started and, normally, I started digging in order to find it somewhere. After more than 15 hours of continuous search I managed to find it - an hour later it was taken even from that last server (somewhere god only knows where, Phillipines, I think..).

Just out of interest I did a search on Yahoo for 'MP3 encoder' and found 3 sites and 3823 web pages, most of them offering free software of one kind or another. What are they doing differently? Isn't the MP3 encoding algorithm fixed?

Does all CD's sound the same? There is much of the analogy.
Xing is the fastest at a massive dynamics compression penalty, Fraunhoffer is the best quality and kind of slow, out of commercially available, to my knowledge. I haven't been checking them lately, however.
Btw, although there are some pro applications like broadcast, with real-time encoding, where I appreciate the use of MP3, I don't see much worth in focusing my attention to MP3 as I don't find it satisfactory in the quality terms. Please, wake me up when someone comes with a wide acceptance of some form of looseless compression (but not "It's great but I'm the only one using it" kind, like Meridian).

What rates were you trying to get?

From what I remember the old encoders that first came out on the internet
Xing and the first Fraunhauffer (speel) codecs had issues. The high frequencies get chopped off for the Fraunhoffer (speel) and I recall hearing that the Xing used to be really bad. A random guess would be to compare the old iso encoders at low quality setting vs running a better one at high quality... Mpeg Compressor with the Fraunhauffer codec?

You can check on www.pcavtech.com for some mpeg compressor comparisons, there's also some other ones on the web. I did a search for "mp2 vs mp3 comparison" before.

However they are all "i'm the only one using it" type.
MLP is most likely the best bet as it is the lossless compression algorithm proscribed in the dvd-a format and all machines capable of DvD-a
will have MPL decoders - problem is: Meridian havent released the Encoder/Decoder as general software (Which is really silly - as if folk were convinced it would be implemented in player and did have a freeware software en/decoder , it might be more widely used in the puter world and thus become the lossless compression of choice - the key is to make it freeware and ubiquitous)

i'm usually a lurker and vinyl inmate, but here's an interesting link with "empirical" data/info - looks as though fraunhofer won out... slower is better?
