Why Wima Caps?

People have suggested using Wima caps as an upgrade to the MSB Link DAC, such as the Nelson upgrade, etc. I am wondering at their level of quality given their price point. I guess it doesn't have to cost a lot to be good, but are they that good?

I also know that there is a space limitation inside the Link DAC. The caps can not be over 1" tall, so the Wima's make sense here.

People are also talking about bypassing them. What value to bypass with? 10%? More? Less?

Any input would be appreciated. I am trying to gather information for my Link DAC mod and several other tweakers are interested as well.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

No, however they are some of the few remaining decent quality industrial suppliers and I at least refuse to over the moon for some Cap's that ain't better but have a "designer logo" on them.

And Wima makes quite large Value Cap's that fit the Pin-Spacing of Electrolyitc, especially good for coupling Applications....

I recommend to use Wima FKP of small value <=10nF in parallel with good Quality small value Polystyren.

There is one mod I'd recommend. Loose the entire analogue stage. Just take the Output direct from the PCM1716 Chip via a DC blocking Cap to the Output. End of story. The PCM1716 is a rather poor sounding chip anyway, don't waste too much time faffeling about with it.

Build the TNT-Audio Convertus DIY Dac, mucho, mucho better.

A small physical package is definately in order for the Link. Wima and the other common metal films are a step down in sonic quality to the Reliable, Wonder, and MIT film and foil types. I would go with the wima and forget the bypass. If you decide to add the bypass try a .1 or .47uf cap. I guess I should mention that if the primary cap is of low value, then the recommended bypass value must be figured in.

Where can the TNT DIY Dac be found?
