As an owner of the Marantz/Ishiwata CD7, I'm bound to say that the CD17 disappoints me, and it does; but at that sort of money, you could try a player by Naim, Densen or buy an old Pioneer 'cd table' player (of the Legato link era), which will provide you with a decent transport to attach any number of unusual kit or manufactured dacs.

The CD7 is very, very nice.
How does it compare with the earlier CD23 ?

Not sure which model you're referring to michael. But the CD7 can usefully be compared with the Wadia 860x and the Naim CDS2.

The CD23 was a single box 1-bit player from the Marantz Music Link series.
It looks like a small grey brick with gold front panel. A top loader with removeable smoked glass lid.

I think it was only sold in Japan and Europe.
Mega expensive...4000 UKP, $15K in NZ.
Ken Kessler in HFN reviewed it in a complete Music Link system.

Sound is very analog like and it looks great as well.
It's been my main CD player for the last 3 years.

I can send you a pic if you like.
