SACD Web Store - Business Opportunity??

I've been reading with interest the various complaints about the availability of SACD on the web and elsewhere. Common complaints seem to be less than knowledgeable sales staff, poorly coupled web and ordering systems, inaccurate representation of stock/availability etc.

Another problem it seems is that people have to go to many sources to get the DSD material they want.

At the same time a number of people have stated how keen they are for the format to survive and are even willing to put down there own hard earned $$'s to buy into the new format.

Give all of the above and the fact that many retailers/distributors seem uninterested in future double inventory and SACD in general, there seems to be a business opportunity for web based sales of SACD material? Or am I missing something? Unlike a conventional CD store one wouldn't have to spend an arm and a leg to be able to claim to have every title in stock. And for the forseeable future the potential owner/operator could even get to review every new release.

on the contrary I think this is a terrible idea, especially for someone not experienced running a web business. the large music store websites may not be a quick read for ordering SACDs, but they DO sell them, despite Pete's experience. Towerrecords.com actually sells 'm pretty cheap. These web stores have inventory and shipping systems already in place, as well as customer service and all systems are go. they also have a little something called name recognition that can take years to develop.

assuming a new startup web store was able to survive the thin years of SACD and eventually be in the position to do a lot of business based on a wide assortment of titles and greater market penetration of the hardware (this is a big assumption since there are far too few titles and customers to support a business at the moment), there is every reason to believe that the existing web stores will have added a link or section to their websites making it easy to find and order SACD titles. actually that is likely to happen sooner rather than later, and all the advantages of the startup vanish at that instant.

I certainly wasn't suggesting that anyone quit their day job!! :-) (Note, I will not be investing in SACD hardware in the coming months!)

Perhaps it's because I tend to shop from the smaller (specialised) (physical and web) retailers that I assume this will appeal to others?!

For example I buy my classical music (if it's not Naxos) from a small store in Vancouver, my folk from another specialty store and order all that hard to find prog from a Prog web outlet in the US.

I generally avoid the places with the name recognition as they often don't have what I'm looking for and often charge more for shipping than some of the smaller independents. More importantly I really enjoy the recommendations and conversation that the speciality retailers provide.

Nevertheless, I'd have to agree with you that you probably couldn't feed a family of six on SACD software sales!

And the success of SACD is very doubtful, even if it survives, it will not be anything more than a very specialist product. Unlike the launch of CD, which was very eagerly greeted by the general public, SACD has generated no public response, awareness or interest whatsoever.

DVD Audio might have fared better, and there still may be a market for selling DVD audio discs to people using DVD players as their CD source also, but due to the less than stellar sonics, not much better than the ever improving CD, and the totally screwed up launch, it looks dead at birth.
