The link is to a recent article of mine in a trade journal for the loudspeaker industry. There are links to playlists of the recommended tracks both for Qobuz and Tidal.

The theme is Vocals: Male, Female, and Group.

They insisted on a recent headshot.

Well, I look like a hard-boiled egg, because I had to get a buzz cut so my derma surgeon could assess the state of my scalp.

The second installment is in the works.

ciao,

john

And I'm flat-out stealing it for use when anyone asks me what I do! Also, thanks for sharing the list, John.

The best tracks for subjective evaluation are tracks you know by musicians you're familiar with.

As I pointed out in a similar thread in the hi-res highway forum, Qobuz has a large collection of playlists from the manufacturers and other vendors that showcase the sound. Just look for Hifi Audio Partners under the main playlist screen. I've been listening to a few of them lately and some are really good, others only so-so, but the good ones have some spectacular recordings.

Her claim is that "multidisciplinary generalist" is simply a euphemism for "Daddy's baffling inability to hold down one job."

She also once commented that Hovhaness' music sounded like it was written by the love child of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Sibelius.

She teaches Japanese language and Far Eastern literature; but the world of music criticism missed out on a modern Dorothy Parker.

ciao,

john

Agree. Really good recordings sound really good on just about anything. , posted on March 19, 2023 at 12:45:43
Plus aren't you really listening to the system, not the speakers? I use a test tone of 315Hz for mapping room acoustic anomalies. Test tone vs test tune, you can learn a lot from an empty cardboard box.

Well done! Perhaps she would find Kandinsky's artistic charms inkandinskynt?

Hi John, my favorite piece you asked about comes from the cd The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's a recording done in 2003 instead of 1951...Bernard Hermann composer and Joel McNeely conducting. When I lived at my last apartment and my sub woofer was hooked up this track called Gort, when the appearance of the robot comes out of the flying saucer a Contra Bass Tuba is employed. When I played that track from one of my favorite movies my next door neighbor came running out like there was a bomb attack knocking violently on my door.Another audio test is a trumpet solo done when the little boy brought the alien to Arlington Cemetary. It will bring you to your knees. He tells the alien of his father's death at Anzio. That is my sound test cd ...Mark Korda

Particularly in academia, specialization often entails learning more and more about less and less, until you know nearly everything about next to nothing.
