Hi,
Unless Micheal Fremer has some listening room where you have to dress up in a haz/mat suit I think he should of addressed the new Rega 10's dust cover.
There is no way that cover will protect against dust. Having a cat with asthma and forced hot air for heat has forced me to become familiar with dust.
When I took a shower this morning I noticed a new Dial bar of soap. They streamlined it, etched a large logo, and curved the bar to save product and minimize cost. Half the soap was gone before I could use it.Rega, the bar of soap reminded me of your new dust cover. The idea is worse than putting a headphone jack on your turntable base.
Take care and if you have a McIntosh MA353 Integrated, page 63, don't run it in a salt room...it could be the pits!...Mark Korda

Mark, you wouldn't perhaps think that having a cat with asthma and therefore needing to force hot air (and dust) into the room makes your needs a little , um, unusual?

For most people the Rega cover is perfectly adequate. It covers the platter and the arm. It is a type of design that J.A. Michell have been selling for years as the Unicover. My friend uses one for his Thorens 124 and Decca International arm. No complaints about dust ingress. Yes dust does land on the walnut plinth (in contrast the Rega doesn't really have a plinth) but that is easily removed with the advanced technology of the duster.

Another friend has a Rega 8, a model which has been out for a couple of years now. It has the same cover as the 10. He doesn't complain about dust nor have I read of a single complaint about it in the time that the 8 has been available. If it were a real issue I am sure we would have heard of it.

Hi PAR, thanks. I had no idea other tables had this type of cover. I'm trying everything to combat dust to keep my cat healthy and that cover looked like a bad idea to me. Thanks Par, Mark.

Hi PAR, this is why that dust cover would not work for me, and I really admire everything Rega does. When your turntable is spinning it is creating static electricity. That attracts dust.Thats why in 1985, the last time I fired up my Technics SL-20 belt drive I put my dust cover down real quickly as to not get any more dust in the grooves. I used to clean my records like Tony Randall cleaned the apartment, Odd Couple, I'm showing my age. When I saw the Rega dust cover 1985 came back quick. I'm sorry about the headphone jack comment as it was on a VPI model a couple years ago and I think they pulled it. Thanks PAR for the info....Mark Korda

That Rega "dust cover" certainly looks inadequate, but many high-end TTs these days come with no dust cover at all. So any airborne dust will settle on the component, and glom onto a record in play as its static charge builds. Better to keep everything covered, even if the solution is inelegant. Because DUST NEVER SLEEPS!

Hi Brian,
If you look at the dust cover picture you would be better off just throwing a plastic garbage bag over that table. It looks like you can't flip it down when playing anyway.A cheaper way for more protection of your investment.
I know the real costly tables have no dust covers as such but what kind of room are they used in. The best musical experiences I've had were not in these sterile germ and dust proof sound rooms that resemble a lab but in more relaxed and lived in rooms,,,hey! a living room.
Brian, I will never understand that dust cover...take care..Mark

Somehow, I guessing that Mikey's primary concern is not dust. :-)

But, I'm pretty sure that he cleans his stylus and records as appropriate.
