Hi John,

I've searched for an online recording of this remarkable track, but haven't been able to find one. Do you know if there is one--or would it be possible to post it somewhere (i.e. YouTube or something)?

When I first heard it so many years ago, it was a revelation. I had no idea that different microphones alone could change the sound characteristics so dramatically.

I always wish I could refer people to it on places like, say, guitar forums, where so many people seem to believe the sound of YouTube videos, etc. is an accurate representation of the sound of the guitar. If they were aware of how much different mics could color the sound--let alone the rest of the recording/playback chain--i think they'd have a new attitude toward judging audio online.

Just curious. THANKS
-Bob

It's not available on-line, only as a CD costing $8.95 plus S&H at the link
below. The track on Stereophile's Test CD 1, which I produced, features J.
Gordon Holt reading his essay with a variety of microphones, all of which
color the sound of his voice in different ways.

"I had no idea that different microphones alone could change the sound characteristics so dramatically."

Way back in 1974, I made a recording which I called "Microphone Comparisons". I still have the original tape, done on a modified Stellavox Sp7. Microphones included AKG, BeyerDynamic, Neumann, Schoeps, Sennheiser, and maybe one or two others. Instruments included clarinet, violin, piano, snare drum, etc.

Every mic sounded different.

It'd be fun to do something like that again.

:)

It's not surprising. Transducers that convert mechanical energy to electrical or vice versa are always the most colored audio devices with the largest sonic variation. Think of cartridges and speakers. So there should be little surprise with microphones.

Yes, Test CD 3, released in 1995, and Editor's Choice (2003) are still
available from the link below, as well as 1 and 2.

I guess in this day and age, I need to be reminded that people sometimes prefer to get paid for their work! I've had mine for ages. The others, too.

Years after they were released, I still use some favorite tracks from all three. Not only is the material good, but I'm familiar with the sound of these tracks on a wide variety of systems and configurations I've had over the years.
