Interconnect vs. Speaker Cable

All things being equal (which of course they're not), which component have you found to make a larger difference in the sound of your systems? Interconnects or Speaker Cable? I'm wondering, with a limited budget, which area someone should concentrate on first. I'm thinking one source component (CD Player) to an integrated amp.

Thanks,

John

Interconnects would be my first change, If your budget could handle around $100 try www.harmonictech.com check out the Precision Links. these should have positive effect on your sound, they have a 30 day trial return policy. I bought mine from alan at audiowaves@aol.com since then I have bought their Truth Links which are awesome, I`m still using precision links on another system in my home. Both are very warm natural sounding, easy on the ears.

I've actually got a pair of TruthLinks on the way... Thinking about DHLabs or HT on the speaker side.

I underestimated your intentions, your heading for euphoria with the Truthlinks, I just burned mine in running FM hiss thru them for 120 hours. No longer sound restrained totally opened up soundstage taller wider and especially deeper much deeper. I would recommend 100 hrs burn in before doing any serious listening. I made my own speaker wire using 4 strands of Belden 89292 14g solid core foamed teflon insulation. Jon Risch helped me with the recipe, took off shielding and braided four together with + at 12 oclock and 6 oclock and minus at 9 oclock and 3 oclock. In this config they equal 11 gage. Sound is tremendous I would compare to $800 plus in what available out there. I have an extra 10ft pair getting burned in now that I will probably sell, a friend wants to try them as soon as they are burned in. I recently found 850 ft of this wire at local electronic salvage store. I wouldn`t have known what to do with it if not without help of Jon. Thanks Again to Jon Risch

Great - that's exactly what I was hoping for. I've currently got Radio Shack 10 AWG w/o termination (bare wire). I'm hoping to upgrade that w/in the next couple weeks. I'll check out Jon's web pages regarding diy cable.

Out of curiosity, approx. how much would raw materials cost for a 10ft run - is it fairly easy to do yourself - I have done a little in the way of soldering.

Thanks,

JP

BTW, did you get a chance to check out the HT speaker cables? Pro9/11? I think the 9 is a little (lot) more than I was looking to spend - I wouldn't mind going up to the price of the 11's if I get a significant benefit from it - I'm going to wait and see what the TruthLink does for me before I make any decisions.

Hi there,

First of all, all other things are never equal.

My first question would be what you are using at the moment.

My first recommendation would be to replace whatever is longer.

So with long Speaker-Cables replace these first, otherwise replace the IC's.....

In either case avoid anything stranded and make sure it's solid-core or litz-style cable (the neatly eliminates about 75% of the market including Kimber, Transparent, MIT and many others)....

Thorsten, last time I looked Kimber had individually insulated strands within each small jacketed wire, each of a different gauge for resonance control.

Kimber true Litz - if so sorry for the fubar...., posted on July 19, 1999 at 10:59:00
...If that is true (must be comming from you) I apaolgise to Kimber.

The last time I looked at Kimber Cables it did not appear this way....

Then again, Kimber sell almost anything at almost any price so who knows what I replaced there....

Ciao Thorsten

Thorsten:

Actually, I've already set out to replace both connections - I was just wondering, theoretically, which would make a bigger difference. In my case, the interconnects are 1m and the the speaker cables are 8ft.

When you say avoid anything stranded you're talking about connections like zip-cord/radio shack/monster cable, right. I thought Kimber along w/ AudioQuest and most other high-end cable manufacturers did use solid core cable - if what you're talking about is relatively low guage cables individually encased in a dialectric and bundled/braided together.

Thanks,

John
