In the early-90s, my main speaker was the underwhelming Paradigm 5SE. It had those awful spring-loaded terminals, which accepted either bare wire or pins. So after I graduated from college in 1993, and returned home to San Francisco, high on my priority was to replace the Paradigm 5SE.

Three of the new songs used to audition audio products were A-ha's "Dark Is The Night;" Billy Joel's "Shades Of Grey;" and Oleta Adams' "Hold Me For A While." In early November, I picked up a demo Signet SL-280 B/U, which did make the latter sound more "adult." Unlike the Paradigm 5SE, the SL-280 B/U had five-way binding posts. Actually, each speaker had two sets of binding posts, for bi-wiring. Sigh, so that meant potentially doubling the cost of speaker cabling.

I met an old friend from middle school downtown. We walked through Crocker Galleria, and then went to Ultimate Sound, which were still located in the dungeon basement of the Sherman Clay Building on Kearny.

I considered the XLO Pro 1200 internal biwire and Kimber 4TC/4TC. Since I was already using AudioQuest cabling, including the Type 4, I, perhaps influenced by the ads on the back cover of Stereophile, took the safe path, and bought a discrete bi-were set of Indigo. Screech!!! However, I idiotically order the Indigo with spades all the way around. While I was connecting them to the back of the Muse Model 100, the heatsink fins and sharp edges scratched our wrists. Just as challenging was bending the leads, in order to bi-wire on the back of the SL-280 B/U.

My old friend from middle school? I met up with him again, and he handed me an AudioQuest CV-4, which, he says, is about 4 years old.

This pair is actually labeled Left and Right. Thankfully, AQ name this side "Amp," and provide arrows to indicate signal flow.

Likewise, the other end is labeled "Speaker," and includes the DBS (Dielectric Bias System) battery pack, which we'll cover in a future post.

Whereas my old AQ Indigo had plain-looking gold-plated spades, this CV-4 comes with angled silver-plated spades. The barrels are also labeled "Amp."

Correspondingly, the other end is labeled "Speaker."

On reviewing my drafts, my old middle school remarked, "Wow, you never hear "Dark Is The Night," "Shades Of Grey" and "Hold Me For A While"."
