So I was using a hearing protector/defender a while ago that is powered by a battery. The principle is it picks up all the sounds around you and brings them up or down so they are the same level. In other words, if you are jackhammering and the guy beside you says something in his normal voice, you hear both sounds at the same level. The jackhammer doesn't drown out the voice. It's really cool to experience.

I was thinking that would be a neat concept for interconnects(with a box inline). It could amplify the low level signals, or attenuate the high level ones, making the low ones seem louder. Of course, to a degree no where near the defenders, but ever so slightly. Imagine the hype behind a cable that would mysteriously bring out detail and nuance.

does anyone know if this concept has been tried in a cable? I wonder if this could be accomplished without adding much distortion, or phase shift or whatever other negatives. Is this similar to what DBX has done?
