I am considering purchasing the Naim Nait 5 integrated and would appreciate any general impressions/comments from anyone with experience with this amp. (I have done archive searches already and am interested in any further info. people have to contribute.)

It would be of great help if you can tell us what your cd is and what your speakers are ?

components in my original post because, for the most part, everything is a candidate for upgrade over the next year or so if they don't mate well with the new amp. However, I am very happy with my current speakers -- Wharfedale Emerald 99's -- and I hope that whatever I get will turn out to mate well with them. I am a little concerned that the Nait 5 will be a little underpowered to run the Wharfedales (6 ohms, 150W, 88dB). But I have read that the Nait 5's 30W rating is very conservative. My room is small and I do not listen at excessively loud volumes nor require booming bass. (I currently use an Adcom GFA 5200 power amp -- rated at 50W -- that drives the Wharfedales very well for my tastes.) Adding a Naim power amp and using the Nait 5 as the pre- is a possibility for the future.

I primarily listen to vinyl and my current turntable is a Music Hall MMF-5 with the stock Goldring 1012GX cartridge (soon to be upgraded to the Goldring 1042). It is a solid performer, but is a candidate for upgrade. If I purchase the Nait 5, I will also be purchasing the Stageline phono stage.

I listen to CD's only when absolutely necessary and do not spend money on CD players. I use the Sony NS500V and do not intend to replace that.

I would also mention that my musical tastes are quite eclectic. I listen to a wide variety of genres including classical, jazz, classic rock, 80's pop, and vocal. So I like versatile gear that handles a variety of music decently, even if handling no single genre perfectly.

So, I know this is kind of vague. But I am mainly looking for general impressions of the Nait 5. I guess what I really am trying to get a feel for is how the Nait 5 works as a powerhouse around which to build a system.

Pink Fish Media forum. To broadly generalise it's populated by ppl who favour the flat earth approach to audio (ie PRaT and musical architecture over "nice sound"), mostly refugess from the Naim Audio forum @ http://naim-audio.infopop.net
