Hello, I am very new to the audiophile territory. i have the opportunity to buy luxman R404 in about 50$ and also the sansui 771 in 200$, both good condition and working. i heard many good things about the sansui 771 but was also recommended the luxman, is this luxman r 404 any good at all?

I have a friend that uses that Sansui 771 in his system and REALLY he likes it.
Luxman is a fine brand, so don't take this the wrong way. Luxman pieces seem to be individual. Some are world class, while others are simply OK.
I am a Luxman fan but I've never heard that model to offer any advice.
Me personally, I'd still take the chance and go for the Luxman. As long as the tuning circuit works. it uses a chip that if it fails, the tuner is trash.

Depends on the era. When Luxman was acquired by Alps in 1984, the product line got watered down and became ho-hum at best. It wasn't until it became Japanese owned again in 2000 that Luxman began its return to true hi-end status. With that said, not sure if there weren't a few notable exceptions in the "Alps era", but I'd probably only be interested in products pre 1984 or post 2000.

I had a few of the mid 80's Sansui receivers and they were quite underwhelming as compared to their past products. Their construction quality was on the extreme side of cheap. With most parts made of plastic. Even the faceplate, which may have looked like brushed aluminum, was made of plastic and coated to look like aluminum.
But it's not like they were alone. All the major brands were going that route in the 80's.

Not the 771. Nice healthy amp and I mean into 2.3 ohms. The tuner seemed sensitive but somewhat narrow band. Nice tone controls. Very smooth volume control but the typical overdone loudness comp. (leave it off)
This is probably older than what you're thinking. Later units I agree.
