Looking For Some Relatively Inexpensive Monoblocks

I have may very large headphone amp/DAC sitting on top of my amplifier in the middle of my entertainment center. When played at moderate volumes the amp gets very hot and gets the DAC/headphone amp hot enough to make me nervous.

The solution I would like is to use a pair of monoblocks that will fit in on the smaller side shelves of my entertainment center. I have been looking at Icepower, N-Core, and gainclone based solutions, but I can't seem to find anything that is an assembled amplifier or complete kit, ships to the US, has an XLR input, and costs under $1000 for the pair.

My speakers are Speakerlab DAS3's so I don't really need more than 50-60 watts per amp.

Can anyone suggest something that would work? Personal experience with such amps would be a bonus.

They seem to have turned out well.

Unfortunately not a complete kit but you can order the amp modules from Parts Express and the cases from Ghent Audio; total cost under US$600 ...

No experience yet with their amps, but they get good reviews for big bang for the buck. If interested, look at their specs for their Vidar and Ragnarok.

There's an alternative solution that would cost you less. Your present amp gets hot - why? It's probably Class A or AB. Change it to a 2-channel Class D amp and your heat problem will vanish - and a stereo amp is cheaper than 2 monos of similar performance.

Another ever cheaper option - move your power amp to the top of your stack of kit. It will then be properly ventilated and won't get so hot. Or add high heels to the feet of your headphone amp to lift it up a couple of inches - this will improve amp ventilation.

Unfortunately you don't list your current equipment in your profile so offering suggestions for a new amp is difficult.

Don't be tempted to go for a cheap Class D amp that includes a well-respected amp module as it takes a lot more than the module to make a good amp.

Respected class D modules can sound just fine in generic cases and without the custom "buffers" touted by big-brand OEMs.

The modules themselves are almost invariably tested a the factory so careful assembly is generally all that is required.

Not sure what your setup looks like, but Monarchy Audio SE-100 Deluxe monoblocks (original or MKII) are compact. They run in class A and sound very nice which means they run warm. I previously owned a pair. Priced new they are above your range, but you should be able to find used within your budget.

Emotiva has a mono block called the XPA-HC1 for 699.00 which is half as wide as their regular amps. It's powerful at 300 watts in to 8 ohms and 600 into 4 ohms. They're switch mode class H so also run cool.

EMO also sells and ICE amp in the form of the PA-1 which is more in line with the OPs power request.

Also an on-board SMPS so it is a very simple device...
