Hi all, wonder if anyone can help me here. Was listening to my system last night at a pretty high volume level. I went to turn it down to shut it down for the night and when I hit the down volume button on the remote the system dropped in volume and went almost mono sounding. Both left and right sound the same. Like someone put heavy. heavy blankets over the speakers. I thought a tube had blown in my preamp so I replaced them with new spares and no difference. Today, I plugged my monoblocks directly into my DAC/streamer and the same thing so I've eliminated my preamp as the culprit. Any ideas? My system consists of Wilson Maxx 3's, Classe CAM600 monoblocks, EAR 912 preamp and PS Audio Directstream with Bridge 2. I won't mention my turntable setup as I wasn't listening to it when this happened. All drivers in the speakers are working, there is just minimal and muffled sound. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

It sure sounds like the amps assuming nothing happened with the speakers.

The only way to track it down is to swap in another amp and source that you already know works on another set of speakers.

put your ears to the tweeters. When they blow that is how it sounds. Like a blanket was put over the speakers.

Thank you. The tweeters still have sound coming from them. All of the drivers and midranges do too, they are just not loud and muffled sounding

'I won't mention my turntable setup as I wasn't listening to it when this happened'

but does the system play with your TT as a source? maybe the DAC is the problem ... do you have another DAC or source besides that ... like a disc player?

be well,

When this happened all the sudden, what was the source ? The DAC ?

I can tell you from an engineering standpoint that it is highly unlikely that both channels would develop a fault affecting their frequency response. I would say over 1,000:1.

What other sources do you have ? Can you plug something else in and see how it sounds ? Not a cassette deck though, if you get a shitty tape it will probably sound muffled anyway. But like a CD player, on its own, not through the DAC, or a tuner.

It is unlikely a DAC will do that, but everything else is more unlikely.

Just using my form of logic here, how does it sound on other sources ? I know some people now only have a DAC, in this case rather than running out and buying a new one to try, maybe borrow one.

Fred: "Hey Barney, you got a spare CD player laying around ?".
Barney: "Sure, I'll go find it".
Fred: "Oh by the way do you have a CD I can play in it ?".

Hello, yes it was the DAC/streamer (PS Audio Directstream) I was listening to, I can try my TT tomorrow night. I agree with you that its unlikely that both monoblocks could go out at the same time, this is a strange one!!! Will update when I give it a whirl...

I'm assuming you are adjusting volume through the Dac and have the pre-amp at a pre-set volume setting?

Hooking up your turntable will definitely narrow things down to possibly being the Dac.

If it is the Dac, you should probably check both the remote and Dac settings.

Might just need a reboot on both the dac and remote. I don't have your particular components. Just relating to fixing problems regarding Video cable boxes and their remotes.

Goodluck and hoping it is something "user" fixable.

Cheers!

Isn't there a button on the Directstream dac remote to put it at half volume? Maybe that's the button you pressed.

Thank you everyone. Some great feedback here, much appreciated. I pulled the grilles off tonight, unplugged all of the electronics and it is the tweeters that are out. I have spare resistors in the accessory boxes that came with the speakers so will change them out tomorrow night. I checked the spares with my meter tonight and they are all to spec. I will update once I replace them. BTW, Tyler at Wilson is a great tech customer service employee, I rate his service off the charts!

Thank you for pointing that out. You are correct. I certainly didn't mean to exclude anyone. This is a great forum. Glad to be an audiophile!!!
