Do you think it is worth the cost to have an Audio Research VS-55 retubed and repaired at the factory?

I haven't checked the price, but I'm planning on shipping both ways complete tube compliment which I won't use and then the cost to repair the damage from a runaway tube.
I sure do like the amp though.. guess I answered my own question. duh

LOL yes you just did.

Yes it is worth the expense of repair, rebuild and retubing. Those units were great and not easy to replace quality and sound wise.

Think of it this way. How much better is something else going to be.

I have a VS-55 that I highly prize. In the past I've also had a tube go and take out one of the resisters. If you can find a reliable, knowledgeable audio repair shop near where you're located you could save a bundle on shipping costs. You might also consider switching to KT-120's if you're replacing tubes. I did and I prefer them to the 6550's.

Can that amp take KT-88s. Because the Gold Lion KT88s are wonderful sounding and tough.

If I can find a local technician I'll go that route, but I am going to have it done.

Much appreciated!

They even make excellent smaller tubes. I've been using their 6922, B759, aka the 12ax7 and GZ34. Excellent sound and quality built

Definate increase in bass response/tightness with my Legacy Focus SE's.

Voicing with my Carvers via Telefunken 12AX7 Smoothies.

Try the GL B759s. They are just as good as my RCA long black plates.

Shipping that is More than likely to create damages. When it get dropped by some min wage overworked handler.
Let alone thrown off the loading bay.
There could be significant damages.. some of it unseen.

No One within driving distance that can tweek the bias?

I'm afraid the amp needs a little more that a bias tweak. I found a tube tech in Charlotte, NC with a lot of experience AND a schematic to boot.

Thanks for your post. I shipped a HK Citation II with less that desirable results so I know where you are coming from.
