The cover is paper thin, like my other Bothy Band LP, but the sonics are very good, and the music is terrific.
"I got the blues in my soul
But my boogie-woogie feet
Are takin' me to rock and roll!!!"
Excellent release for 72' I believe. Agreed that although "Frankenstein" was way overplayed, the rest of the album is packed with truley great songs from some of the most talented musicians at the time.Rock on brotha'
I love Autumn and Round and Round (Derringer's pedal steel licks are so tasty. Oh, and all the rockers rock. Why skip Frankenstein? I agree that I've heard it so much that I rarely pull it out to listen to Frankensein, but once it's on the table, may as well listen to it. It still never fails to rock out and satisfy.
...that one shouldn't literally skip "Frankentstein". It is just that I hear folks say offhandedly, "oh yeah, the one with Frankentstein". Then it becomes apparent that they never really listened to the rest of the LP, or maybe had once or twice on someone's old car 8-track. They had heard "Frank" so much on the radio that they considered it trite, and left it at that. You're right, there are many good rockers on the LP - its kind of an "Undercover LP", if you catch my drift... :-)
I like this album but every copy I've had - all NM looking - sounded so compressed and crappy that I took them to Goodwill. The vinyl didn't look or sound that bad, just the recording. How does yours sound?
really paid that close attention to the sonics. I have a yellow label Epic which would make it an earlier pressing. I've always just taken it at face value for what is is. Whatever the sonics are is what they are. It still rocks and it's analogue. Can't really change how it sounds. There's a lot of crappy music out there that's brilliantly recorded. However, I'll stick with Edgar.
I have heard something like six different pressings of this one. One of the two that I didn't dispose of promptly was the one that I bought about 20 seconds or so after the LP hit the shelves (yellow label). It is a wee bit noisy between tracks but the sonics are very good. Big and ballsy throughout and a very deep soundstage. The other is an orange label that I bought maybe a year or so later and it is nearly as good. The others were as you mentioned. I either got lucky, or a very early issue is a must (which is often the case, of course). I'll postulate that so many of these were printed after the smash that "Frankenstein" became, and later copies were pressed poorly in a rush to market. Also, remember its vintage and the whole story of oil-crisis vinyl.

The record co released it against the bands wishes, It was sold as live LP, and it wasnt, or if it was it wasnt up to the bands standards.Intersting as I dont think I have ever heard it, How does it sound?

Opinion on this vs. the 15 reviewed recently on AA? I have a great LP version from Germany and the CD reissue also.

...I've had this album since shortly after it was released and always thought that Kai Winding was some studio hack that thought that he could blow a horn and decided to put out an album. Boy, did I get a shock; I looked him up on the web one day last year and found out that he is/was a well regarded trombonist and much older than the 25 year old beach bum that I thought he was. Ah well, the music is, well, different and enjoyable; and that is what counts.

Crank up your talking machine, grab a jar of your favorite "kick-back", sit down, relax, and let the good times roll.
