After numerous applications of clorox and Concrobium to the jacket; after three treatments of Sporocidin enzyme solution; and after many days airing out the jacket in the sun, I have a very good copy of James Brown "Showtime." I have never heard a whole album of James Brown before, and I actually liked it. He definitely has soul, and the recording on the Smash label is excellent.
All of these James Brown LPs were found at a garage sale years ago, and they were all water damaged. They sat in my garage until now, as I didn't want them associating with my other non-mildewed records. The jackets no longer smell of mildew after several treatments.
Follow Ups:
I brought back a Hoyt Axton album that was almost as bad. How bad was it? Record store gave it to me for free.
BTW, I've got both Showtime and Say It Loud . Critics tend to dismiss Showtime because of the canned crowd noise and song intros, but IMO they're both excellent records.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
I read about the crowd noise later too, but that didn't bother me. The LP had decent bandwidth to make it full sounding, and Brown's emotion is great. I did the cleaning as a challenge, and I had never heard a James Brown record before this.
Gravity is another decent James Brown album that critics didn't like.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
Years ago i went to a flea market. I had to stand in line to get in, in the rain, with my bag in hand. I found a couple of decent blues records, J.L. Hooker, Johnny Winter. Back home I discovered the rainwater got into my bag. All the covers were soaking wet....
I cleaned the records and put them in new inner covers. I put the covers in front of the heater. It took days for them to dry up.
"The torture never stops"Greetings Freek.
I think you have unearthed treasure.I bought a couple of his albums, on smash records , but the sonics weren't good, so I gave up. Might have to revisit that decision, few musicians have his way with a tempo.
For what it is worth, Brown said his best recorded performance was done at a thing called the "Teenage Awards Music International" which can be found on Youtube.
I just did a search and got a lot better copy than the fuzzy playback I got from searching within Youtube.
I found the entire recording very interesting, from the background history of some real strong acts, to the absolute technical marvel of the first pay for view.

Unbelievable restoration. Very good work. Lot's of patience, I'm sure.
"'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice./And when justice is gone, there's always force./And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!" Laurie Anderson, "O Superman (For Massenet)"
20 records outside in the sun leaning up against the garage doors and the front steps. I would take them in at night and out to sunbathe in the morning. I was only using 100% clorox then, and I needed to air out the mildew and the clorox.

the video was necessary to relieve my fears. Glue and PVC obviously don't mix. That's the same reason I put wax paper between record jackets and the objects I use for weights after gluing the jackets. I don't want the weights to attach to the cardboard/heavy paper.
Actually, the most difficult part of the restoration is getting the mildew and mildew smell out pf the record jackets. I have been using Concrobium(trisodiumphosphate + sodium carbonate) and clorox separately. Success has been incomplete, and clorox rots paper if overused. I am sure open to suggestions for mildew eradication. I might try hydrogen peroxide next.
Thanks for reintroducing the glue method.
You're a better man than I am! I can't imagine how you have the patience for that kind of "restoration" , as our friend Kirmuss might say. Resurrection is the right word.
