So after reading the last few posts about retipping, I have a question.
My Grado Master 1 has this 5 piece OTL cantilever, meaning it's telescopic with different materials for each part. Should I try to get just the diamond itself replaced leaving the cantilever? Has anyone done a retip on this cart?
Thank you,
Robert Mills

In general, I would always replace just the tip and not the whole cantilever if you wish to preserve the original sonic signature as close as possible.
The reason why retippers often promote a new cantilever is that this is how they receive the styli from the supplier so it is a much quicker job for them to hack off the old one and glue the new cantilever into the stump.
The problem with that is that multiple things are changing (potentially also including the cantilever length and therefore VTA) so you are likely to completely alter the sound.
It requires more care and time to replace the tip only and therefore expect this option to cost a little more. However, at least it retains everything else you like about your cartridge.
If you send it in to Grado for a replacement, you are not guaranteed of getting the same performance. My personal experience with Grado (at least with the Prestige range) is that the quality is very variable so I would say replacement is the highest risk option with respect to potential disappointment.

mine is old now. I'd expect an improvement with the Master3.
That's what I've always done with my Master. Presumably you'd end up with the latest model which IIRC is a Master3. Its more expensive than sending it to a retipper but IMO your cart likely won't sound the same when you get it back from a retipper, plus you'd be upgrading to the latest iteration of the Master from Grado.
This was the quote:
Opus3 - $180
Platinum3 - $265
Sonata3 - $400
Master3 - $670
Reference3 - $1000

I'm actually trying to decide whether to send it again. I got lucky a while back and found a NOS vintage mm and 5 NOS original replacement styli for it that I think is as good as my Master. Ends up to be much cheaper than essentially buying a new $6-700 cart every 1.5-2 years. But as I said, I would rather send the Master to Grado than a retipper.
