Giving away my Dual 1219 to a friend in need. Was going to install a brand new AT VM95C in the deck before I turned it over.
Now I'm thinking about keeping the VM95 and installing something else. I've got two AT 440MLa carts and can spare one. Also have a Grado Black2 I can let go.
Hanging on to the 95C gives me the option of upgrading to the ML stylus at some point in the future.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?

I think anything you give your friend would be an impressive act of kindness based on your statement. A Grado is a pretty good cartridge, but, since you have two AT 440MLs, if it was me, I would give up one of those. That way you keep a good variety of cartridges for yourself and this never ending hobby, because, having spares of anything nowadays is a good idea.
In all likelihood he will have a higher capacitance phono stage that might be too bright with the AT. I'm having a heck of a time taming my 540ml.
Surprised you're having a problem with the 540. I've run mine at every thing from 0pf to 500pf and heard little to no difference.
I have found that it works best with the VTA set so that top of the cart body is parallel to the LP.

but it is good to get outside input. I don't know much about the Black, but I'd probably let that one fly. Of course there are no wrong choices here, you can always buy another Black.
P
and though they have their problems they can sound excellent. They can easily hook ya and make you want more up the line.
think I'm just gonna go with the original plan and put the VM95 in the Dual.
Except the Grado carts won't fit the AR XA headshell.

I purchased two VM95C cartridges to put on vintage tables I want to sell. Fully operational tables should sell easily I hope.

One thing's for sure. That AT is a pretty damned good cartridge. About half the price of a cheap replacement stylus for an old Shure, IMO the AT is a much better cart.
Yeah, it's mounted in the Dual. Spun a test record.
