Yesterday I listened to a UK press of Five Live Yardbirds, a 1964 release that recently was purchased used from eBay. This is my 8th Yardbirds LP and I'm almost embarrassed it's taken so long to pick it up - it might be their best. Sonically it's awesome, kind of that exciting threadbare kind of sound I often hear from a soundboard without the vocal prominence. Tasty.
Next up was Ten Years After - Rock & Roll Music To the World. I wasn't expecting much from this eBay purchase, having bought it from a seller who had it for cheap, and had a Faces record I wanted. A bit laid back and trippy compared to the Yardbirds record above but a great record in it's own right. Good sound too - I'm glad to own it.
One of the things I did with my pandemic down time was revisit my blues and my blues rock collections. It's been very worthwhile way to spend time and very rewarding for my listening experiences.
Follow Ups:
Says all you want to know as why anything Yardbirds deserves a listen
yes, sort of ... when Page replaced Jeff Beck as the guitarist he steered the Yardbirds away from their more traditional blues-rock / rave-up sound introducing an 'eastern' flavored influence before they disbanded
the first inkling of Zeppelin was the instrumental 'Beck's Bolero' off of his album Truth ... Page & John Paul Jones came together there with Kieth Moon drumming [nice!] ... shortly thereafter an unrecognizable 'Yardbirds' formed playing live that was essentially Zeppelin with the addition of John Bonham but Robert Plant had yet to arrive. after he did, they dropped the Yardbirds name and went out live to test drive new material and the rest is history
I'm pretty sure that's a good timeline
regards,

That is pretty accurate but just to be pedantic, before becoming Led Zeppelin the band was being booked as the New Yardbirds to distinguish them from their disbanded predecessors. I know. I booked them !
"We need less, but better" - Dieter Rams
that's right ... New Yardbirds! left that part of the progression out
thanks!
Like The Who could ever exist without Keith Moon.
Ooops.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
Two great Lp's and groups that often get overlooked. I do enjoy TYA a Space in Time and play it often.

I will have to track down that Yardbirds album - thanks.
it's the first time I had heard an electric guitar bowed
or a theremin outside of 'Good Vibrations'
but Jimmy Page 'combined' the two
regards,
Seems to me that vinyl prices are down quite a bit recently. It's been a good time to buy. Saw a vg++ copy of Savoy Brown Blue Matter go for $15.50 yesterday - could have sworn those were selling for twice as much a couple of years back. I watched it for a couple of days and it was at 14.50 with a couple of minutes to go - I got distracted by some stupid TV show and when I looked back there were 11 seconds left. I tried but missed getting a $21.62 bid on it.

of weeks ago, but at least the winning bid was $18 more than I was going to bid. I had even retrieved my beat up old Rolex watch with a sweeping second hand, and I shook it to get it wound up again. I ended up talking to my son at a restaurant as the final seconds ticked away. I forgot about the whole thing until we got home, and there was my stupid watch next to a print of the eBay auction.
My biggest distraction was at an auction house. Four boxes of jazz LPs were one of the last auctions of the night, and I stood for three hours waiting. I felt like I fell asleep standing up after those three hours, and I finally came to as a guy was picking up a record box and hauling it outside. I thought maybe he had just won one box, and I quickly bid on the next one. Turned out he won all four boxes, and my bid was for ladies clothes or something. The auctioneer saw I was confused and allowed me to retract my winning bid for ladies clothes. He said that was my one and only mistake at his auction house and watch out in the future.
I have never forgotten that loss of all those jazz LPs. It would have been my biggest haul ever, and each 12 X 12 X 16 box went for $20. The auction house closed forever during the pandemic.
That's the kind of thing nightmares are made of. Sorry for your loss.I usually wait until 10 seconds left to post my final bid - that gives plenty of time to hit the "confirm" screen. 1 bid at the end of the auction, high enough that I won't feel bad if I don't win the auction.
Occasionally I make a minimum bid early in the auction if it's something I really want just to make sure it's not so easy for the seller to cancel the auction because of lack of action. I've put high bids on early only to see them eating away by one minimum bid after another during the course of the auction. The Blue Matter record sold for $15.50 I would have won it for $16.00 dollars if I had got my bid down, and if I wasn't looking for a bargain I might have bid $31.62 - and I really wouldn't have been surprised if someone paid even more. Like I said it's a good time for finding bargains.
