About two months ago I bought a turntable from Japan, a Yamaha GT-1000. I purchased the table from Unisound via eBay.
A bit over 30 days after I got it, the table developed a problem. After it warmed up (3 to 4 sides) the platter would speed up quite a bit and stay that way until shut off and restarted. This happened a few times.
I called my tech, who called Yamaha to get a service manual. Turns out it does not exist in English. I opened the table and poked around. There was nothing obviously leaking or exploded and I found two chips on the motor driver board, both unobtainable. Gulp.
My tech was fairly sure the issue was not related to the chips and while a repair was possible, he might not be successful.
For the heck of it I contacted Unisound and let them know what was going on. They got right back to me and offered to take the table back and they would pay for shipping, or I could have a $250 refund to apply to the repair.
The table is in incredible condition and I'd likely not find another so nice at such a good price, so I opted for the risk of the repair.
My tech wanted no part of having a 50 pound turntable to deal with, so I just sent him the boards. He replaced all of the caps pictured below, cleaned up a few suspect solder joints and resoldered all connectors.
I reinstalled the boards and everything has been fine since. I've played as many as a 11 sides in a row with no issues. It seems like its fixed.
Credit where credit is due ...Unisound is great to deal with.

Follow Ups:
It's a good idea to replace all electrolytics from the get-go, after purchasing a vintage direct drive turntable. It costs a few bucks for new capacitors, and it can save unobtainable ICs from damage.
I was going to do it anyway, this just got me to do it a lot sooner.

that did NOT turn out to be a Gigantic and Tremendous problem. ;^)Your patience paid off Dean. Now for hours of enjoyment.

Yes, for a bit there it was looking like a gigantic and tremendous disappointment.
Now I hope it last as long as I do.

As this is logically a 100V 50/60 cycle table, do the folks in Japan that you bought it from say it's OK to use it on 120VAC US voltage?
TIA

Glad to hear it all worked out. That is a solid beautiful turntable.
I agree, I really like the way it looks ...and love the way it sounds.

Interesting how many of the discussion threads about these 80s vintage Yamaha turntables end up talking about the PF-800/PF-1000. There were some good TTs from Yamaha back then. I love my PF-800.

The years of the PF-800 and 1000 coincided with my last years in the business. I sold quite a few of them. Nice tables.

This is the table I use for my mono LPs with an AT mono cartridge. The TT was gifted to me by my brother when he finally abandoned LPs for CDs. I cleaned it up a little, but it was still in great condition. I'm really happy with it. A terrific vintage table.

Keep us posted on how well it keeps playing.
And as usual, I love your headshell (Orison?)

I've had that shell for over 30 years. I like it.
When I saw this table, I had to have it, but was low on funds. I took a bunch of pictures of my SL-1200 and listed it here and on the Facebook Marketplace ($600.00).
90 minutes later I met a guy in a local parking lot and the Technics was gone, at my price.
When I got back home I hit the 'Buy It Now' on the table and while it hasn't hasn't exactly been smooth sailing, it seems to have ended well.

you've REALLY bonded with it!

I had no intention of looking inside when I got it, but am glad I chose to.
The plinth is quite impressive. It is a solid, multi-layer block with spaces cut away to fit the boards, motor and to route the wires.
Best of all, it sounds really good.

that big cap looks bad. would not be surprised if all of them were shorted or way out of spec.

The integrity of the cap is fine on the outside and as you noted, it's just has some glue on it, from when it was taken off the board.
