I rather taken with it. My question to the cognoscenti is if there is a current phono cartridge that will work well with the 3 gram effective mass of the tonearm. My thought is that an AT740ML or 750SH will add mass due to the heavier body and might be the most likely candidates. They also fall just below the 8.5 gram capacity of the arm without work arounds. Any and all guidance is appreciated.
Another alternative is to put a new stylus on one of my vintage cartridges. The ADC XLM MKii Improved seems a good candidate but the new EVG nude elliptical stylii are out of stock, though VOM does have a JICO.
Follow Ups:
Those are the arms used in the tonearm over the years in order from early to last.
It seems like mine is stepped CF, but would like to verify. Thanks.
The CF was a good move forward for reliability. The aluminum was a fragile arm tube and easily bent or broken.
Any plastic body Grado will work with that arm. It will have a resonance frequency of 11.5. You can do the calculations using this chart!

I remember something about the first widow was a carbon fibre arm and the second was aluminum or am I wrong? And I think they both had knife edge bearings? In any event it looks like you scored a big one, have a blast!
...SL-1600MK2 and the 78 speed of my SP-15. Note that I no longer have the headshell/cart

the right side, and I have had an eBay search for at least 20 years. I found the last left side hinge from a parts house over twenty years ago. An eBay seller once sent me a cracked hinge without mentioning it in the eBay ad.Where did you say you live? ;^)

but I should shut my mouth on that because the price, if you ever find any, will surely go up. Hope you someday find some.
I was surprised to find a lot of neighborhood garage sales yesterday, maybe fleas will open up this year too. Good luck.
freezing every night now in Alaska. My Kenwood KD-550 was actually found at a thrift store in the 90s, when everything vinyl was being discarded and cheap.

There was one just like that w/ same arm listed local to me recently. I bet it's the same one? Great score!
I had a Widow for quite a while. Best cart I had on it was an AKG P8E, but eventually the suspension hardened.
Conventional wisdom is that MC's will not work on that arm. However, a little known exception is the original Denon DL-301 mk 1 from 1980. It worked surprisingly well. Very hidden in the literature, which had to be translated from Japanese, was the fact that it was one of the few MC's designed with high compliance for low-mass arms. I had a NOS 301 and I was gob-smacked how good it sounded on the Widow in contrast to conventional wisdom.

someone here bought it. It's a tough arm to get it to match to something and I used to have a few ADC's but the F15 & 20 Ortofons were nice also. A blast from the past for sure

I saw that on Craigslist, glad you picked it up.
I get my second shot on the 12th. Anytime after that works. Bring a super high compliance cartridge, LOL.

Seen a lot of them for sale sportin' the BW.

I had KD-5070 with a Stanton 681 for almost a decade. It was my first big stereo investment after finding employment out of college.
Had that and a Sansui 9090db, a really sweet Marantz cassette deck, and a pair of L100's. The receiver, cassette and speakers I bought from a friend in college who'd bought them while overseas in the Army. He needed money in a bad way, and made me a sweetheart deal. Eventually the Marantz got replaced by a Nakamichi, the Sansui by Counterpoint, and JBL by Vandersteen. And now all that stuff is gone too.
I do not foresee another equipment churn in my future. Pretty damned happy with the level of playback I have now.
with a Rega arm and SAE cart. He loves vinyl over CD and streaming
The Ortofon OM Super series are pretty low mass, even lower when you remove a little brass weight they insert into the top of the cartridge. Nice sounding, too.
BTW, I had a KD500 when they were new - nice table. I wish now I'd kept it. Enjoy yours!
Because the mass of the arm is so low, I think that I need to have a cartridge with the most mass and the highest compliance. Goes against received logic, I know. So with the Ortofon, I would keep the auxiliary weight in. Great suggestion.
I have mine in an SME III (also low mass). The SME uses multiple lead weights in its counterbalance, which you can add or remove to get the lowest effective mass and still balance the arm. The Ortofon was so light (even with the brass weight left in), I had to remove most of the lead weights (all but the last, large one).
But your point is a good one - the objective isn't minimum mass, it is to get the optimum resonant frequency of the arm/cartridge combination. That's typically around 10 Hz. Ortofon says to remove the weight in low mass arms, but I agree with you, I don't think that is necessarily the best advice.
The SME has fluid damping (amazingly, still fluid after 40 years), so it isn't critical for me. But in your arm, you'd need to see whether that brass weight actually helps get the resonance close to the goal of 10 Hz.
......with the fluid damping and the Titanium Nitride arm tube. Funny enough, it too was on a Kenwood KD 500.
I also mounted an SME iiis on a Thorens TD150. That is the one without the fluid damping, kind of the stripper model. I think the iii had an effective mass of 5 grams, if memory serves. I really liked that arm, congrats.
But the body is plastic. I'm nuts about my 540. Best cart I've ever used, will not be changing unless AT comes up with something better.

......dual magnet and coil layout is the same as well. So all I think that all I would be gaining with the 7 series is mass at the headshell, which seems much needed with this arm.
Great endorsement, glad you are enjoying the cartridge, Captain.
You could probably find an NOS V15TypeIII with original stylus on the 'bay. Perfect match for that arm. Bet it would be spectacular.
Of course, once the stylus wears out...

....also have a couple of M91EDs, but with bonded elliptical replacements. The best bet may be a V15V PRO S. I think these all had HE stylii.
What makes me very nervous, and why I am inclined to do this but once, is that the wires are like human hair, and, of course, are 50 years old. I really don't want to tempt fate. I'm not that engaged that I can rewire the bloody thing.
from LP Gear for my Shure M91ed. I have read good reports for the stylus amd willing to give it a try. I actually like the M91ed on my Dual 1229.
I still have an M91 body. No stylus. It's the only Shure left in the cart box.
I had one of the early VL styli in a V15V. Didn't really use it long enough to form an impression.
I think at $120, I'd hold out for an NOS stylus from eBay.

..."That is neat". I may get the TEAC one for the SP-15 but my daily driver SL-1600MK2 has holes in the platter for the infrared(?) arm lower/positioning sensor.

He's going to try to solder new clips on them. I tried and the wires seemed like they were falling apart.
But, the Vestigal was made in England. The Black Widow was MIJ when it MIJ really meant something.
I'd recommend Cardas clips if you need 'em. Very easy to get a good solder joint.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Yes, those Cardas clips are awesome, but I am afraid of internal wire failure. Maybe I am being unreasonable....again.
I can get it set up, but it's not worth the effort. Ain't bad, but it ain't great either.
I set it up for the V15 Type II Improved, and gave the cart to my friend when he took the TT back.
If the wires on the BW are going to break, it would be after they exit the arm or at the cartridge end, seems to me.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Probably more audiophilia nervosa on my part.
If you've got an old wired computer mouse around, you've already got replacement wire in the proper red/white/green/blue colors.
