That is really one nice gift. If I lived in Charlotte, I'd come over and help, just to hear it.
Here's the Novak protractor with the method I used, have always used.
The most important thing to do is extend the line that points to the arm pivot to the end of the paper, as close as you can to the pivot.
The second thing of importance is that even a dead balls accurate (opinions of the engineers here notwithstanding) alignment is the beginning of listening for where the placement of the stylus sounds best, not the end. Consequently, making a protractor as I did, glued to plywood etc., isn't crucial. You can get close enough just with the paper printout itself. Tighten the headshell bolts just enough so that the cartridge doesn't easily stray from it's position but can still be moved with a little thumb pressure, your fingers on the arm, not the cartridge, for fine tuning.
Third, every time I hear, when I display something I've crafted, "I wish I had your skills" I'm reminded that crafting is 90% desire, 9% the patience to learn from mistakes, and 1% some inborn craftiness.
