Last month I posted about listening to Beethoven's Fifth symphony conducted by Bruno Walter on 78. Well, I've been steadily listening to 78's and came across another Beethoven's Fifth, this one conducted by Arturo Toscanini, which inmate briggs mentioned he listened to when he was younger.
So briggs,is this the one?
I was thinking of writing up a shoot-out type review of the two as recorded on 78 rpm records, but my classical musics reviewing abilities are zip.nada. Furthermore, if I were to post it over at Classical Court, I suspect I would be raked over the coals, considering the penchant for digital over there.

Follow Ups:
Yes, this is it. My first symphony record purchase in say 1948.
As it turns out, I have two sets of Toscanini's Beethoven cycle on vinyl. One is the 1939 cycle and the other was recorded between 1949 and 1952. The pamphlet in the 1939 box makes mention of a 1944 recording of the Symphony cycle.
I kinda suspect the the 78 Fifth came from the 1944 recording. Do you think that is correct?

Out of curiosity I transferred this 5 years ago as RCA's metalwork was also used for the HMV release/s and which were slated for 'aggressive' sq; as RCA employed treble eq boost compared to the flat eq of UK recordings.
You can see the recording details etc @ the below link: used Shure V15/3 with original 78 elliptical stylii.
..I'm sorry it took so long to find this; I'm slow at times. OK, all the time!I have the 1939 Toscanini recordings of Beethoven Nine Symphonies on vinyl. I haven't listened to all the records yet; actually I haven't listened to any of 'em yet. I'll give 'em a listen, hopefully soon.
The pamphlet that that came with the set says that that Toscanini also recorded the cycle in 1944. I suspect that my 78 recording of the Fifth may be from 1944.
I got the album cover pictures reversed; sorry about that.
I also the Toscanini Beethoven symphony cycle in a fancy set recorded between November 1949 (the year I was born) and November 1952.

I performed a MEGA Download but was unable to unzip it because my zip software expired long ago. I suppose I should activate it sometime, but I keep seeing dollar sign references. I suspect I won't.
Thanks for link but I'm too old & cheap to get the software.

And yet, per my post a few threads below, I myself long for those pre-digital days, when HIP performances of 18th century music were but a collective passing fancy in the demented brains of a few overweening academicians! ;-)
(BTW, my imprint performances of all the Beethoven Symphonies except the Eroica were the ones by Toscanini - and for the Eroica, it was Koussevitzky!)
I'm just blowing hot air when I say I plan to review classical music performances. I have had no musical training past the eighth grade, except for the ten years (1987-1997) playing electric bass in blues band here in town.
I have fallen in the pitfall of: I don't know jack about classical music except I like a certain amount of it and I know what I like. Generally considered a big mistake by educated people.
I started buying classical LP's in the eighties when people began dumping them for compact discs (perfect recording that'll last forever). I have been trying to read up some about HIP and the dangers thereof. Maybe I'll understand more in the coming months.

Yes, but a number of famous classical-music critics with successful careers achieved their success without knowing jack about classical music either! ;-)
So I say - don't let that stop you. You certainly have a reaction to the music, and that certainly counts for something. Everybody's opinion can be worth reading, knowledge or no!
Who else will have the two sets of records that are needed to do an alternative / competing review?Mike
