As I rotated cartridges, my eye fell upon the replacement's cantilever. The cartridge dressed neither left nor right, but down, the cantilever out of line with the generator: in short, the angle of the dangle just weren't right. Soundsmith had refurbished the cartridge (an EMT-based MC) about six years ago and I'd had it in regular rotation since then. I've no idea how I'd bent the cantilever but southward bound it was. With a sigh, I mailed the cartridge back to Soundsmith.
I was braced for another $400USD rebuild but instead Soundsmith realigned the cantilever and recalibrated the cartridge. Turn around time? About two weeks, going back and forth across an international border. The charge? Return postage only. I'm happily listening to the revenant as I type.
I can't promise that Soundsmith offers a guarantee for life, but this kind of service merits attention and praise.
Thank you, Soundsmith!

As far as I can recall, he passed away quite some time ago. I could be wrong.

I feel Ms. Smith would be a better source for that encomium.
Got it back and promptly buggered the plastic holder for the stylus/cantilever. It just broke while inserting into the body. I posted my bumbling on here and Peter promptly replied asking me to return the stylus assembly. I told him it was not his responsibility. I broke it. He said, no problem. Send it back. So, I did. A couple of weeks later, it came back, repaired, with No charge on the invoice.
That told me all I needed to know about Peter Ledermann and Sound Smith.

...they've "done me right" on three different carts over the last 10 years (and one was a "rescue"--initially deemed unrepairable). I know there are other services out there, but I've never felt the need to "stray".

since I have yet to contact him on the crazy skewed azimuth cartridge I was sent back last year. Did you call or email with the issue?
The errant cantilever was my doing. I booked an appointment for the patient through Soundsmith's website.
I had sent my Denon 103 in for repair in 2017 it was ready in four weeks but every time I got the $300.00 to pay for it something more important came up. About two years passed and I figured they sold or otherwise disposed of my unclaimed cartridge, but much to mu surprise they still had it and I arranged for payment. I was kind of embarrassed about leaving it there so long but David was as nice as can be and we arranged payment and I am now a proud owner of two SS cartridges.
